BAHRAIN WON ARAB VOLLEYBALL DUEL
Manama, Bahrain, July 22, 2018 – Hosts Bahrain powered past Qatar in a lop-sided match 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-10) in the 19th Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship at Isa Sport City Hall on Sunday.
Fresh from bagging their first win in the top-tier competition following a straight-set victory over Iraq the previous day, Bahrain took rapturous home crowds advantage to make a clean sweep against the maroon-jersey players, coached by Brazilian Percy Oncken, who guided their youth age group as well.
With two wins in a row, Bahrain emerged as the Pool D winners after preliminary round, while Qatar had to battle it out against Iraq, beaten in straight sets by hosts Bahrain.
“Thanks to our home fans who supported and motivated us, we won this crucial match. Despite the win, we did not give our maximum to the match. We will try our best in the next round to come up strong again,” Bahrain captain Ali Saif commented after the second home victory.
“Qatar was not a big challenge for us. Still, we need to improve our matches to be able to challenge strong teams,” Bahrain coach Khalifa Yusuf said.
“My players need more experience. Qatar started their developmental plans long time ago and we need time to raise our level. In this match, they made a lot of mistakes, so they could not hold their fighting spirit,” Qatar coach Percy Oncken stated.
