BANDARA’S 28 LIFT SRI LANKA’S 3-1 TRIUMPH OVER QATAR

Manama, Bahrain, July 26, 2018 – With a 28-point harvest by wing spiker Jayalath Bandara, Sri Lanka cruised past Qatar 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 26-24) in the 9th-12th playoffs at the 19th Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship at the Isa Sport City Hall on Thursday.

Sri Lanka proved a tough nut to crack for Qatar, leaving the rivals to continue their losing streak in the top-flight championship. Sri Lanka moved up to challenge the winners of the match between hosts Bahrain and Turkmenistan in the 9th-10th playoff.

Jayalath Bandara was assisted by Guruge Perera with 15 points for Sri Lanka, while Mohamed Ahmed carved 16 points for Qatar.

“My players were mentally affected by the regulation. We faced a different draw as we entered the tournament. We needed to be informed of the changes. In this tournament, we gave a big fight to the opponents and we are upset as we targeted to be among the top seven but we dropped down to a lower place that we did not deserve. We accepted the loss to Kazakhstan in our last match because some of my players were injured,” Sri Lanka head coach Permalal S.R.G. commented.
