CHINA, JAPAN WIN TWO IN SUCCESSION AT AVC EASTERN ZONE WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

Zhangjiagang, China, July 11, 2018 – China and Japan remain undefeated at the 2018 AVC Eastern Zone Women’s Volleyball Championship after respectively thrashing Mongolia and DPR Korea on Wednesday.

The Day 2 encounters started with the match between Chinese Taipei and Macao at Zhangjiagang Sports Center Gymnasium. Chinese Taipei overcame the failure from the previous match against Japan and seized every opportunity to attack. Their determination paid its dividends as they spent only 59 minutes in brushing off Macao in straight sets 25-6, 25-9, 25-14 for their first victory in the championship.

Also recovering from the failure on Tuesday, Korea adjusted themselves and won the game with an impressive 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-23) victory in their match against Hong Kong.

Korea won the first set 25-18 by their perfect defense and powerful attacks. In the second set, both sides came out in full force in an effort of winning the set. They played the match with flexible strategy and Hong Kong used up their six chances of substitutions. However, the performance of Korea was slightly better than Hong Kong in the hard-fought set, which was won 25-23 by Korea.

Both sides tried their best in the third set but Hong Kong turned on the heat to lead 23-21 However, they became more prone with successive unforced errors, leaving the Koreans to claw their way back to win the set 25-23 and match.

Meanwhile, unlike the previous match against reigning champions Chinese Taipei, Japan faced difficulties in their second match against DPR Korea on Wednesday However, thanks to the effective spikes of Shima Mikoto, Japan managed to win the first and second sets 25-15 and 25-20. In the third set, both sides put on a great show from the beginning, seeing the score increasing alternately. DPR Korea finally put themselves back on track and won the set 25-18. Unfortunately, they could not maintain their great form to the end. In the fourth set, Japan did not give DPR Korea any chance of coming back as they won 25-19.

Hosts China and Mongolia played at the last match of the day. China won the first set 25-15 by their careful tactical coordination.

At the beginning of the second set, China fared much better by wonderful spikes from Wang Mengyue. China kept this advantage till the end and after earning three points in a row, China safely obtained the second set 25-16.

The third set was fascinating since Mongolia came to a 3-1 lead at the beginning. Before the first time-out, China trailed narrowly at 14-15. After the time-out, the attacks from China were aggressive and powerful spikes by Zhu Yuezhou of China ended the rivals’ challenge 25-20.

The 2018 AVC Eastern Zone Women’s Championship (Zhangjiagang, China) presented by Huachang Group will continue at the Zhangjiagang Sports Center Gymnasium. All the teams will fight to their best Thursday to vie for berths in the semi-finals.
