IRAN CAP DAZZLING VICTORY OVER KOREA

Manama, Bahrain, July 23, 2018 – Iran overpowered Korea 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-19) to capture the  Pool A top spot with six points from two straight wins at the end of round-robin preliminaries in the 19th Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship at Isa Sport City Hall on Monday.

Morteza Sharifi top-scored with 13 points including 12 attack hits, while Porya Yali added another 13 points from exceptional spikes.

Korea, with a 1-1 record at the preliminary matches, finished second in Pool A with 2 points from the 3-2 win over title-holders China.

Iran started fast with the world-level players as they overwhelmed Korea 25-22 with crashing spikes of Amir Hossein Esfandiar, who previously took the MVP award at the 2017 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship in Bahrain.

After such a lamentable opening, Korea started the second set looking far more settled as impressive hustling from Im Donghyeok, the only player from senior Korea team who also won the Best Opposite Spiker award at the last year’s U19 World Championship in Bahrain, and lightning-fast spikes from Jeong Taejun. Still, Iran proved steadier at the final assault for the hard-fought 25-21 win in the second set.

In the third set, Iran regained the initiative as they quickly led from start to finish for a comfortable 25-14 win.

“My players performed very well. Today, we put pressure on Korea from our service line,” Iran head coach, Behrouz Ataei commented.

Morteza Sharifi, the top scorer who is going to take his first legionnaire experience in Italian Volleyball League, said: “We played in the youth age group with this team of Korea before. They brought that loss in mind and were a bit scared. They played good but we were better”.
