JAPAN RETAIN ASIAN MEN’S U18 TITLE AFTER 3-1 DEMOLITION OF KOREA IN FINAL REMATCH

Tabriz, Iran, July 6, 2018 – Japan won back-to-back Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship title after pulling off a dramatic 3-1 victory over Korea in the final showdown at Poursharifi Stadium on Friday.

The impressive 20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-15 win not only smashed the Korean dreams of capturing the Asian Men’s U18 title for the first time in 19 years, but also stretched Japan’s invincibility in this year’s Asian Championship to three in a row.

Earlier this year, Japan claimed the Asian Women’s U17 crown in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand and repeated the similar feat at the Asian Women’s U19 Championship in Bac Ninh, Vietnam. The exceptional win in Tabriz was the Japan’s three in succession in the Asian level competition. More importantly, it was a sweet revenge for Japan as they went down to Korea in the pool plays earlier.

Against Korea, the only team which have yet lost a match en route to the Friday’s climax, Japan played a perfect match as they fielded several individual talents including Mizumachi Taito and Ito Riko.

Japan started dismally in the final showdown to lose the opening set 20-25, but came back much stronger to win the remaining three sets 25-14, 25-21, 25-15, match and the championship.

At the previous edition in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar last year, Japan thrashed Korea in straight sets in the final showdown to reign supreme over the Asian Men’s U19 Championship. The Japanese continued their superb form to beat the same rivals in the third-place playoff at the FIVB Men’s U19 World Championship in Bahrain.
