PHIRAPHAT SHINES IN THAILAND’S HARD-FOUGHT WIN OVER TURKMENISTAN
Manama, Bahrain, July 22, 2018 – Phiraphat Prommajan highlighted Thailand’s impressive depth with a spectacular performance against Turkmenistan to complete the pool preliminary phase on the second note of Pool B in the 19TH Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship at Isa Sport City Hall on Sunday.
Having lost the opening set against Thailand 20-25, Turkmenistan came to believe in themselves, refreshed their power and seized the opportunity to be standout in the second and third sets 28-26, 25-22. But then, Thailand received strong efforts from their players, including Phiraphat Prommajan (20 points) and Chaiwat Thungkham (14 points) to win the breathtaking rally 25-21 to extend the match into the tie-breaker.
Turkmenistan attempted to engineer a brave victory after two sets down in this tough match, but their fortunes turned when Thailand left them behind 10-5 in the decider and walked away with 15-10 win.
“I spoke from my heart to the players. I told them that winning or losing is not important. All I care is their quality. It was then that the pressure minimized and they overwhelmed the rivals,” Thailand coach Somboon Nakpung commented after the match.
“We were nervous and lost our confidence in second and third setst. We tried to listen to the guidelines of the coach to stay focused and win the match,” said Thailand captain Danupat Jantawong.
