THAILAND ROUT AUSSIES 3-0 TO FIGHT FOR 5TH PLACE
Tabriz, Iran, July 5, 2018 – Determined Thailand did not give Australia any comeback opportunity as they thrashed the taller Australia in straight sets 25-16 25-22 25-21 to next contest the 5th-6th playoff in the 12th Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship on Friday.
The opposite players from both teams scored the most points despite poor success rates. This match was not about individuals as the strong Thailand, led by Sutthiphong Donlakkham, showed consistency to celebrate their victory.
In the first two sets, Thailand performed better on the receiving side. Aussies fought hard to puncture the Thai defence, but the opponents came up with solid blocks and aggressive spikes to win 25-16 and 25-22.
Australia did everything to come back in the third set but it was Thailand’s excellent teamwork and combinations which held off the rivals’ attempts. Thailand took the set 25-21 and match.
“Australia tried hard for a comeback in the third set and when we lost some crucial points, I reminded my players that Australia successfully made a comeback in their previous match against Malaysia and it might happen again in the match against us. I told my boys to play more seriously and tried to avoid unforced mistakes. Then, my players got stronger, made up the missing points and could finally close the match in straight sets,” Thailand head coach Janewit Ocha-umphawan said.
