VTV BINH DIEN LONG AN PREVAIL IN THREE AGAINST LANKA LIONS
Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, July 16, 2018 – Vietnam’s VTV Binh Dien Long An rushed into a 3-0 victory against Sri Lanka’s Lanka Lions (25-8, 25-19, 25-18) at the SMM 2018 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship in Boris Alexandrov Palace. The Vietnam club will proceed to the 5th place to 8th place semifinals on Tuesday, July 17, while the Sri Lanka squad finish ninth in the competition.
Dang Thi Kim Thanh led VTV with with 12 points from 8 attacks, two blocks and two service winners. Thilini Perera (SRI) was the top scorer on the board with 13 points.
VTV Binh Dien Long An captain Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoa noted how every player on their roster was utilized for Monday’s match. She said “This is a good move for our young players to play in an international competition, for them to get exposure into a higher level of play.”
VTV Binh Dien Long An surged to 16-4 in the first set, enabling hitter D.T.K. Thanh from the flank. She also scored off several service aces, to make for a solid start. The Vietnam club played with much momentum, without giving their opponents any space to come close. They played with precision and registered merely two errors to win the opening set, 25-8.
For the next set, VTV Binh Dien Long An continued to show superior skill and technique as compared to their opponents. The Vietnam club ushered in its young players Nguyen Hoang Anh Ngoc and Huynh Thi Hong Nhung, and they delivered accordingly. However, Lanka Lions started to find their sense of rhythm and played along. Apsara Senevirathna and Perera connected with their share of attacks and blocks to help force 12-12 on the scoreboard. Consistent play was needed for the Sri Lanka side, but they were unable to sustain their tempo, to give way to VTV’s 25-19 win in the second set.
By the third set, VTV Binh Dien Long An coach Nguyen Quoc Vu had come to utilize his entire bench. Each player has had the opportunity clock in some minutes on the court, and to score. They were still prone to errors in attack and serve, but they managed to take the 25-18 win in the final set.
N.T.H. Hoa added “Most of our players are here in an international tournament for the first time, and so maybe they are still nervous. But in the next matches and even in our next tournaments, they will surely play with more confidence.”
