WAHAAD POWERS IRAQ TO 3-1 VICTORY OVER QATAR

Manama, Bahrain, July 23, 2018 – Maher Adnan Abdul Wahaad’s 13 points including 10 spikes in a challenging encounter against Qatar helped Iraq maintain their second place in Pool D at the end of the preliminaries of the 19th Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship at the Isa Sport City Hall on Monday.

Iraq, which went down in straight sets to hosts Bahrain, enjoyed their first win in this top-tier competition following a dramatic 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 25-18) victory over the Qataris. The win earned Iraq three points to finish second in Pool D and 11th overall (R11).

After conceding two-set deficit, Qatar came up with boosted confidence and played more consistently, with Mohamed Ahmed (18 points) playing a vital role in the team’s comeback. However, there were plenty of errors that kept them away from going forward and that was why they lost the fourth set.

“We lost. Still, I am proud of my players. They performed much better than the previous match against Bahrain, but they need some more times to rebound,” Qatar coach Percy Oncken said.

“My team played better today than the match against Bahrain. We are happy for this win and I hope we can do better in the second round,” Iraq coach Darweesh Saad Yahya said.
