ASIAN GAMES BEACH VOLLEYBALL COMPETITION GTM AND DRAWING OF LOTS COMPLETED
Palembang, Indonesia, August 18, 2018 – The General Technical Meeting and Drawing of Lots for Beach Volleyball Competition of the 18th Asian Games Jakarta Palembang 2018 was held here on Saturday at Jakabaring Sport City, landmark sport complex of Palembang.
Head of beach volleyball department of the National Volleyball Federation of Indonesia Mr. Slamet Mulyanto presided over the meeting and delivered a short but cordial welcome speech. He welcomed all the participants, wished everybody enjoying the stay Palembang, and expected the success of competition.
Following the welcome speech, Referee Delegate Mr. Thomas Chang reported on the Rules of the Game to be applied in this competition and the match protocol. Medical Delegate Dr. Yoshizawa Jyoji continued to talk about the medical matters including the doping control and court medical assistance, while Press Delegate Mr. Wang Liang informed the team coaches and athletes about the press interview at the mixed zone and asked them to follow AVC social media platforms including AVC Website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Technical Delegate Mr. Kritsada Panaseri later on introduced the competition format and the pooling principle before the Drawing of Lots for men was conducted.
There are 18 teams confirmed to participate in women’s event, who were divided into 4 pools.
Top seeded team Wang/Xia of China, with Wang Fan and Xia Xinyi, bronze and gold medalist of Incheon Asian Games 2014, who also had jointly won some impressive results like gold medal at AVC Beach Tour Samila Open and 2nd place at FIVB World Tour Sydney, Lucerne and Nanjing since their pairing from October in 2017, will have their rivals KOU/LIU from Chinese Taipei, YUEN/AU YEUNG representing Hong Kong, China and HYUNJI/HA NA of Korea in in Pool A.
2nd seeded team ISHII/MURAKAMI of Japan, fresh from their home soil with bronze medal at the FIVB World Tour 3 tar Tokyo this year in July, are familiar with the city of Palembang as they participated in Palembang AVC Beach Tour last October and finished the third place. They will play the other team of China WANG/ZENG, YU/PAN of Chinese Taipei and TRAN/TRUONG from Vietnam in Pool B.
The best ranked team of host JULIANA/UTAMI is decided as 4th seeded and positioned in Pool D with RADARONG/UDOMCHAVEE of Thailand, MASHKOVA/TSIMBALOVE of Kazakhstan, WONG/NG of Hong Kong and NGUYEN/HUYNH of Vietnam, while the other host pair RATNASARI/EKA will try their best to win a chance to qualify from Pool C composing Japan’s second team FUTAMI/HASEGAWA, Thailand’s pair NUMWONG/HONGPAK, Kazakhstan’s duo RACHENKO/YEROPKINA and CAMINHA/ALIN DE SOUSA from Timer-Leste.
According to the format, all these 18 team will have pool round robin matches and top 3 of each pool will advance to the second round of direct elimination.
“In our pool. Thailand and Indonesia are strong for us. Regarding other teams, China and Japan are of course the strongest. ”said Mashkova of Kazakhstan at the press conference following the drawing of lots.
On men’s side, a total of 32 teams out of 33 on the entry list were grouped into 8 pools. Top 2 teams of each pool will directly qualify to top 16 for the elimination round of 1/8.
Host team RACHMAWAN/ASFIYA ranking second to Qatar duo AHMED/CHERIF in points are decided as the 1st seeded team in Pool A with HAITHAM/AHMED of Oman, HSIEH/WANG of Chinese Taipei and Afghanistan team ASIFI/AHMADI. This top pair of Indonesia, with their best record of gold medal at 29th Southeast Asia Beach Championship in 2017 and recent record of bronze medal at FIVB World Tour 2 star Singapore this year , is highly expected by host officials and supporters as Indonesian beach volleyball team has set the target of a silver medal at the Games.
Qatar duo AHMED/CHERIF, who just clinched the third place at FIVB World Tour 5 Star Vienna early this month and crowned the Palembang AVC Beach Tour last year, will try their best to top the podium again at this city. They will start their tour in Pool B with BOGATU/YAKOVLEL of Kazakhstan, M.LEKAMLAGE/Y.HAMILLAGE of Sri Lanka and JUNYOUNG/HONGCHAN of Korea.
“We have been well prepared in last few weeks and we played some world tour events to keep great. Now we are in the final stop to finish the season for us. ” said Samba Cherif of Qatar, “For us, all the team are really good and well prepared for the Asian Games. It’s gonna be difficult for us. We will just focus the way we play.”
3rd seeded GAO/LI of China, champion of FIVB World Tour 2 Star Singapore and AVC Beach Tour Samila Open this year, will face NORDIN/RAJA HUSSIN of Malaysia, KULESHOV/BABICHEV of Kazakhstan and HSU/WU of Chinese Taipei in Pool C.
4th seeded team INKIEW/PADSAWUD of Thailand, champion of FIVB World Tour 1 star Satun this year and silver medalist of 29th Southeast Asia Beach Championship in 2017, will meet challenges from NOUH/MAZIN of Oman, CHUI/YEUNG of Hong Kong and AHMED/ADAM of Maldives in Pool D.
Pool E consists of Incheon Games bronze medalist Ha Likejiang of China with his new pair Wu Jiaxin, who just jointly finished 3rd place and 1st place at FIVB World Tour 3 star Haiyang and 1 star Anapa last month, gold medalist of Busan and bronze medalist of Guangzhou Asian Games Shiratori Katsuhiro with his pair Ageba Yuya, PHAN/NGUYEN of Vietnam and ALIKHAIL/MAYAR of Afghanistan.
Thailand’s second duo SURIN/ADISON are divided into Pool F with Iran’s VAKILI/SALEMIINJEHBOROUN, Maldive’s ISMAIL/WAAHID and Qatar’s ABDELRASOUL/SAMMOUD.
The second team of host Indonesia is probably to top the Pool F over LAU/WONG of Hong Kong, HOSSAIN/ALI of Bangladesh and ALARQAN/ALQISHAWI of Palestine.
Pool H is composed of ABDOLHAMED/RAHMAN of Iran, HASEGAWA/SHIMIZU of Japan, NGUYEN/LY of Vietnam and INOCENCIO/ROBSON of Timor-Leste.
The Beach Volleyball Competition of the 18th Asian Games Jakarta Palembang 2018 will kick off at 9:00 Sunday Morning on August 19 at Jakabaring Sport City Beach Volleyball Court, seeing 3 matches start simultaneously, i.e. NUMWONG/HONGPAK of Thailand versus CAMINHA/ALIN DE SOUSA of Timer-Leste on center court, RATNASARI/EKA of Indonesia taking on RACHENKO/YEROPKINA of Kazakhstan on court 1 and BOGATU/YAKOVLEL of Kazakhstan facing M.LEKAMLAGE/Y.HAMILLAGE of Sri Lanka on court 2. The final showdown for women will be held on August 27 while men on August 28 with 2 gold medals of beach volleyball to be decided.
Palembang, the capital of the South Sumatra province and the host city of 2011 Southeast Asian Games, was granted the right to co-host the 17th Asian Games with Jakarta on 25 July 2014 at the OCA Council Meeting held in Kuwait. This is for the first time that the Asian Games are being co-hosted in two cities. The 18th Asian Games will be held in Jakarta and Palembang of Indonesia from August 18th to September 2nd 2018.
