AUSSIES OVERPOWER KAZAKHSTAN 3-1 TO FIGHT FOR 5TH PLACE AT AVC CUP FOR MEN


Taipei, Chinese Taipei, August 14, 2018 – Australia edged past fighting Kazakhstan in a dramatic four-setter 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16 in the 5th-8th playoffs at the 6th AVC Cup for Men at the University of Taipei (Tianmu) Gymnasium on Tuesday.

In the first set, Australia troubled Kazakhstan with their aggressive serves and scintillating blocks to advance with a 6-point clear at 16-10. Being hot on the Aussies’ heels, the Kazakh side then narrowed the margin with 3 points behind at 16-19. However, mistakes in receiving saw Kazakhstan go down in the first set 19-25.

The second set turned out to be a similar script which saw Australia lead 16-11 at the second techinical timeout with Stockton Curtis letting loose his attacks. Aussies overpowered the Kazakhs 25-18.

Kazakhstan did not want to surrender easily. They bounced back mightily in the third set and led with steady margin before the Aussies caught them at 16-16. Australia turned things around to narrowly lead 22-21 with destructive attacks, the Kazakhs gave it all out to surge ahead the rivals to snatch the close set 25-23.

The fourth set witnessed Australia regaining their poise, making short work of Kazakhstan and winning another comfortable set 25-16. Powerful Stockton Curtis chipped in with 26 points for Australia including 16 kills and 5 points in block and serve apiece.

Suffering one more down, Kazakhstan were relegated to 7th-8th playoffs, while delighted Australia will fight with either the Koreans or the Thais for 5th place tomorrow.
