China’s WANG/XIA claim gold medal at the Asiad Women’s BV Comeptition
Palembang, Indonesia, August 27, 2018 – China’s WANG/XIA grabbed the gold medal after an epic come-from-behind 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 15-10) win over ISHII/MURAKAMI of Japan at the showdown of Asian Games here today at Jakabaring Sport City Beach Volleyball Court.
China had a slow start in the first set as they were left behind from the beginning before they tried hard to chase up at 7-7 tie. After switching the positions, Japan found the way to restrain the attacks from China with their good defense and launched a 5-0 run from their efficient counterattacks to a comfortable 12-7 lead. Without better solution to crack the Japanese well-organized defense, China conceded the first set 17-21 following a killing spike by Miki Ishii.
Learning from the first set, China improved their success ratio of first attacking in the second. Though the stubborn Japanese fought hard to tie the score several times, China never let them take the lead. After missing one set point at 20-18, China successfully took the set 21-19 and tied the set score with a heavy hit by Xinyi Xia.
The tie breaker saw the Chinese duo lift their spirit and start with a 3-0 lead, forcing Japan to call an early timeout. Nevertheless, China firmly controlled the advantage with their efficient first attacking. Following a powerful spike by Fan Wang, China won the set 15-10, the match 2-1 and the gold medal.
“I am so lucky and glad to win two Asian Games gold medals with two partners. They are both my elder sisters and helped me a lot. ” said Xinyi Xia, who secured her first Asian Games gold medal in her first Asian Games experience in Incheon 2014, pairing with Yuanyuan Ma.
“We made full preparation for difficulties before the final and it was really a tough match as anticipated. Japan had a strong impulse on us in the first set, and we did not give any pressure on them in terms of counterattacking. But we secured our first attacks in the second set and kept opposing pressure on them. ” Xinyi Xia added concerning the match.
“I am so glad to win the gold medal. In fact, I was defeated by my partner Xinyi Xia in the semifinals of last Asian Games in Incheon 2014. I began pairing with her since last year. Though we met many problems and difficulties in our training but I am very confident of her after matches by matches.” said Fan Wang, who won a bronze medal in Incheon Asian Games with her pair Yue Yuan.
In the bronze medal contest under heavy rain, host 1st team JULIANA/UTAMI fully showcased their strength with aggressive service, diverse attacking, and good combination between front-row blocking and back-row defense. MASHKOVA/TSIMBALOVE of Kazakhstan struggled for only half an hour before they surrendered in 0-2 (11-21, 10-21).
