Taipei, Chinese Taipei, August 10, 2018 – Kazakhstan clinched their second consecutive victory to top the Pool A after sweeping Korea 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 30-28) on day 3 of the 6th AVC Cup for Men at the University of Taipei (Tianmu) Gymnasium.

The first set saw both sides trade blows from Kazakh leading 8-7 and 16-15 at technical time-outs to 19-19 tie before the Kazakhs won the set by using their high block (25-22).

With their scintillating blocks, Kazakhstan cruised to the second set (25-19).

In the third set, Koreans kept in leading with improved reception and excellent attacks due to starting lineup substitution before levelling at 12-12. Maxim Michshenko was on red-hot form, overpowering Korean blockers with destructive attacks and helped Kazakhstan lead 22-19. At the final stage of the set, Korea rejected Kazakh’s penetration and brought it 23-23 tie. Although Koreans tried hard to make a comeback, the Kazakhs clawed their way back and won the close set (30-28).

“It was a good game. Both teams had great performance. It was interesting at the end of the game. We are glad to have an additional day-off to take a rest preparing for upcoming game,” said Kazakhstan head coach Igor Nikolchenko.

“It was really a tough game. However, I felt more relaxed during the game, and that made me more confident of performing my best. Although I have no advantage in height, I have confidence in attacking since I jump high and can hit the ball quickly.” said Seonggyu Jeong, who scored 13 points for Korea.

Maxim Michshenko chipped in with a match-high 18 points for Kazakhstan including 14 attacks and 4 blocks.

With two wins in a row, Kazakhstan captured the Pool A top spot and have been classified as R1 to emerge as the first team to storm their way to the quarter-finals.
