MICHSHENKO STEERS KAZAKHSTAN TO 3-1 WIN AGAINST KOREA AND 7TH PLACE AT AVC CUP FOR MEN
Taipei, Chinese Taipei, August 15, 2018 – Kazakhstan brushed off old foes Korea in thrilling four-setter 25-21, 25-23, 14-25, 25-19 to finish 7th place at the 6th AVC Cup for Men at the University of Taipei (Tianmu) Gymnasium on Wednesday.
In the first set, Korea suffered from the Kazakh’s aggressive services to trail with 5 points behind at 11-16. Although the Koreans narrowed the deficit to only one point at 18-19, they could only get three discrete points before going down the first set 21-25.
The second set saw both teams fight it all out before the Kazakhs utilized their height advantage in blocking and attacking effectively to lead 15-12. After a time out, Korea met Kazakhstan at 15-15 before they managed to advance at 20-18. However, Kazakhstan proved to be a strong team that cannot be dealt with easily. A thundering blast by Maxim Michshenko knocked down the Korean’s spike, and stimulated his teammates to snatch the close set 25-23.
The third set saw Korea refuse to bow down any longer. With clever tactics on services, including four consecutive winning aces by Jeong Seong-gyu and another two by Park Joo-hyeong in the end of this set, Korea won a lopsided set 25-14.
Making too many errors in the fourth set, Korea failed in their come back. Kazakhstan notched the set 25-19 and the 7th place, leaving Korea to come in 8th place.
Maxim Michshenko scored a match-high 20 points for Kazakhstan including 17 kills from 27 attempts, assisted by Ustinov Mikhail and Akimov Damir with 18 and 13 points respectively, while Heo Su-bong chipped in with 16 points for Korea including 14 attacks.
