TOP 8 CONFIRMED AT ASIAN GAMES MEN’S BEACH VOLLEYBALL COMPETITION 


Palembang, Indonesia, August 24, 2018 – It is a harvest day for host Indonesia, China and Iran that they each had two pairs qualified to quarterfinals of the 18th Asian Games men’s beach volleyball competition.

For the host team, RACHMAWAN/ASFIYA and GILANG/DANANGSYAH knocked out SURIN/ADISORN of Thailand and BOGATU/YAKOVLEV of Kazakhstan respectively in the elimination round of top 16.

In the encounter between RACHMAWAN/ASFIYA of Indonesia and SURIN/ADISORN of Thailand, host pair proved to be more skillful by beating the latter 2-0 (21-17, 21-18) within 37 minutes.

The first set saw the Thai duo make a hard attempt to chase up from 12-17 to 16-18 behind. Mohammad Ashfiya refused their approaching with mighty spikes, leading Indonesia to the set point 20-16. Following a service error by Thailand, Indonesia won the set 21-17.

Committing several mistakes in attacking and serving, Indonesia fell behind at the beginning of second set but they managed to take the first lead at 7-6 thanks to an attacking error from the opponent. Both sides traded blows untill a 14-14 tie before Indonesia broke the deuce with a 3-0 run to a 17-14 lead. Thailand called a timeout but they could not stop the host pair from scoring, seeing them reach the match point at 20-16. After struggling for two more points, Thailand conceded the set 18-21 and the match 0-2.

Encouraged by this victory and cheered by local spectators, the second pair of host team GILANG/DANANGSYAH performed an epic come-from-behind 2-1 (18-21, 21-13, 15-12) win against Kazakhs’  BOGATU/YAKOVLEV.

Despite missing 3 points in a row to lose the first set in 18-21, the host team established their advantage from the middle of second set, leading 13-8 at the technical timeout. Kazakhs attempted to catch up urgently but made mistakes instead in serving and attacking. Indonesia seized the opportunity and took the set 21-13 following another serving error by Kazakhstan.

The tie breaker saw Kazakhs keep opposing the pressure on host team by chasing closely behind till 12-13. But they were made short work of by Gilang Ramadhan, who finished the set 15-12 with a mighty spike.

For team China, 3rd seeded GAO/LI produced an improbable comeback to eliminate HAITHAM/AHMED of Oman in 2-1 (18-21, 21-18, 17-15), while 5th seeded JIAXIN/LIKEJIANG also had a hard-fought three-setter win by nosing out the Japanese duo HASEGAWA/SHIMIZU 2-1 (21-15, 18-21, 15-13).

Left behind in 3-9 and 6-12 in the tie breaker, China’s GAO/LI did not lose their confidence but chased up point by point to 9-12. Following another spike, China changed the score to 10-12. Omanis were upset and made an irrational action by kicking the ball high out, which was punished by referee with a red card. China gained another point directly to 11-12 and they kept on red-hot form to finish the set 17-15.

For team Iran, 8th seeded ABDOLHAMED/RAHMAN upset 4th seeded INKIEW/PADSAWUD of Thailand in 2-0 (21-18, 21-16), while 11th seeded VAKILI/SALEMIINJEHBOROUN downed AGEBA/SHIRATORI of Japan 2-0 (21-18, 21-15).

The other two quarterfinals berths belonged to powerhouse AHMED/CHERIF of Qatar and 13th seeded NOUH/MAZIN of Oman, who defeated Kazakhs’ KULESHOV/BABICHEV 2-0 (21-8, 21-19) and Palestine’s ALARQAN/ALQISHAWI 2-0 (21-11, 21-17) respectively.

Facing Kazakhs’ KULESHOV/BABICHEV, the second place from Pool B, AHMED/CHERIF of Qatar did not meet any troubles in the first set as they produced a 7-0 run from 13-7 to the set point 20-7. Allowing one more point to opponent, they finished the first set 21-8 with a mighty hit.

Unwilling to yield easily, Kazakhs pounced back the second set, keeping up with Qatar until 15-15 tie. Following 2 killing hits, they even took the lead in 17-15, forcing Qatar to call a prompt timeout. Back to the court, Qatar immediately replied with a 5-1 run to the match point through their positive defense and powerful attacks. Kazakhs had to call a timeout also but it was too late. Though saving one match point with a good spike, they were unable to step further but surrendered the set 19-21 and the match 0-2 following a smash by Cherif Samba.

The men’s beach volleyball competition of the 18th Asian Games Jakarta Palembang 2018 will step into quarterfinals on Saturday, deciding 4 teams to the semifinals, which will be held on Sunday. The final showdown will be held Tuesday on August 28.

Palembang, the capital of the South Sumatra province and the host city of 2011 Southeast Asian Games, was granted the right to co-host the 17th Asian Games with Jakarta on 25 July 2014 at the OCA Council Meeting held in Kuwait. This is for the first time that the Asian Games are being co-hosted in two cities. The 18th Asian Games will be held in Jakarta and Palembang of Indonesia from August 18th to September 2nd 2018.
