IRAQ, SAUDI ARABIA AND BANGLADESH JOIN HOSTS SRI LANKA IN AVC MEN’S CHALENGE CUP SEMI-FINALS
Colombo, Sri Lanka, September 19, 2018 – Hosts Sri Lanka keep their hopes of advancing to the final showdown of the 1st AVC Men’s Challenge Cup alive following their sensational straight-set victory over the United Arab Emirates in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Also joining the host side in the Thursday’s semi-finals were Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Bangladesh.Sri Lanka were advancing to the semi-finals after brushing off the UAE in comfortable straight sets 25-20 25-17 25-15 at the Sugathadara Indoor Stadium.
Lasindu Methmal Gonaragamage was the star of the host side as he chipped in with 14 points for Sri Lanka including 10 kills from 17 attempts and a team-leading 4 blocks, while Deepthi Romesh R Hehathipurage added 11 points. Khamis Mohammed led the UAE with 7 attack points.
The host team are due to next take on Iraq on Thursday. The Iraqis came back to beat Malaysia in closely-contested four-setter 25-27 25-21 25-23 25-20 in the quarter-finals. Hussain Nameer Shamil scored a match-high 28 points for Iraq, with Jian Qin Sim topscoring with 23 points for the losing side.
Saudi Arabia, which finished 10th at the recent Asian Games in Jakarta, also made a step closer to winning the first title. The world ranked No.50 performed brilliantly to beat Mongolia in one-sided battle 25-17 25-17 25-15. Omar Alnajrani led Saudi Arabia with 9 points including 7 attacks, one block and one ace, while Altankhuyag handed Mongolia 8 points.
The last quarter-final encounter saw Bangladesh put it past Hong Kong China in straight sets 25-22 25-21 25-16 to make the cut for the semi-finals. Biswas Horosit scored a team-leading 15 points for Bangladesh, while Poon Chi Leung led Hong Kong China with 10 points.
On Thursday, Mongolia take on Hong Kong China and the UAE face Malaysia in the 5th-8th playoffs, while Sri Lanka play Iraq and Saudi Arabia challenge Bangladesh in the semi-finals.
