KOREA SEE OFF PHILIPPINES 3-1 TO CONTEST 5TH-8TH PLAYOFF AT AVC CUP

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, September 21, 2018 – Dominant Korea put it past the Philippines 3-1 (25-13 24-26 25-7 25-21) victory in the 5th-10th playoffs round of the 6th AVC Cup for Women at the Chartchai Hall on Friday.

Go Yerim chipped in with 23 points from 20 attacks and 3 aces, while Ha Hyejin added 21 points. Alyssa Valdez led the Philippines with 15 points including 14 kills from 47 attempts.

Korea, which went down 1-3 to Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals earlier, made a promising start. Ha Hyejin carried out well-placed serves and exceptional attacks, while An Hyejin and Kim Chaeyeon combined well to produce an impenetrable defence which the Filipinas found it tough going. Racing to a 11-4 lead in the fast-paced game, Korea seemingly dominated the whole game. Go Yerim and An Hyejin unleashed a series of aggressive attacks to help Korea stretch the lead to 23-12. The Philippines bagged one crucial point from Gretchel Soltones before Korea pulled away to clinch the comfortable first set 25-13.

Korea still came up with incredible speed and superb net play in the second set, which they led 6-3. However, though struggling, the Philippines put their acts together, with Alyssa Valdez and left-hander Mylene Paat tearing the rivals’ defence apart to meet Korea at 10-10 and stay in front with a 3-point advantage at 13-10. After back-to-back spikes from An Hyejin, Go Yerim and Kim Chaeyeon, Korea and the Philippines levelled 18-18 before the Philippines tightened their defence and struck back with good shots from Valdez and Charleen Abigai Gruz to surge away to win the hotly-contested second set 26-24.

The Koreans ruled the third set, which was one-way traffic, with the Philippines simply blown away by a fierce Korean barrage – with Ha Hyejin and Go Yerim too powerful from spike range. Korea won the effortless battle 25-7.

Both teams fought tooth and nails in the fourth set which saw them locked in a tight contest from the very beginning of the set. Levelling 9-9, Korea surged away in strong fashion after Ha Hyejin punctured the Philippines with her fierce attacks and Han Sooji and An Hyejin producing solid defence to help the team lead 21-18 and win the exciting set 25-21 and match.

With the win, Korea advanced to contest the 5th-8th playoffs against Iran, while the Philippines will battle it out with Kazakhstan for the 9th position.
