VIETNAM THRASH AUSSIES IN ONE-SIDED BATTLE TO CONTEST 5TH-6TH PLAYOFF

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, September 22, 2018 – Vietnam, led by hard-attacking Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, brushed off unfancied Australia in comfortable straight sets 25-14 25-15 25-21 in the Saturday’s 5th-8th playoffs round of the 6th AVC Cup for Women at the Chartchai Hall here.

Dang Thi Kim Thanh scored a team-high 13 points for Vietnam including 11 points from 25 attempts, while Jennifer Sadler became the lone Australian player who scored a double-digit 14 points.

Australia were playing without their ace spiker 192cm-tall Rachel Rourke, who, coach Shannon Winzer reasoned, needed some rests from tough matches to recover. Jennifer Sadler was in place to lead the team’s challenge against the Vietnamese.

Both sides opened up with almost the same standard in the first set which saw the score tied at 6-6 before Tran Thi Thanh Thuy’s powerful attacks and Bui Thi Nga’s fast spikes moved the Vietnamese ahead with a 5-point clear at 16-11. The team never looked back from that to take the easy first set 25-14.

After a poor start in the first set, Australia still became prone with unforced attacking mistakes in the second set, while Vietnam went on a run of some crucial points to take total control of the game. Leading with a 10-point advantage at 22-12, Vietnam held on to clinch the set 25-15.

Australia tried to put up a fierce fight in the third set. Their more determination bore fruits as they chased from trailing 7-12 to come within a whisker of closing out the margin. However, Vietnam still had enough to pull away with a 4-point advantage at 24-20. Jaimee-Lee Morrow attacked to the back court to give Australia one crucial point, but a serve from Jennifer Sadler went wide. Vietnam won the set 25-21 and match.

With the convincing win, Vietnam will next contest the 5th-6th playoff, while losers Australia were relegated to compete in the 7th-8th playoff.
