Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, September 21, 2018 – In-form Vietnam pulled off a completely lopsided 3-0 (25-16 25-14 25-15) win over young Kazakhstan in the 5th-10th classification round of the 6th AVC Cup for Women at the Chartchai Hall here on Friday.

Tran Thi Thanh Thuy chipped in with 15 points for Vietnam including 13 attacks from 29 attempts, while Dang Thi Kim Thanh added 12 points including 8 kills and 3 aces. Ainagul Aizharikhova led Kazakhstan with 8 points including 3 blocks.

Vietnam lost 1-3 to Kazakhstan in the fifth place playoff in the recent 18th Asian Games in Indonesia, but there, Kazakhstan sent in a fully-fledged team. In the AVC Cup for Women here, Kazakhstan were represented by young players whose age average is 22.2 years.

Powered by the 190cm Tran Thi Thanh Thuy, Vietnam opened up aggressively to capture the pole position in the first set with a five-point advantage at 8-3 and showed their consistency with solid defence to stretch the lead to 23-13. Kazakhstan tried to regain their form, but their attempts were to no avail. Kazakhstan took the comfortable set 25-16.

The attacking rhythm was still with Vietnam in the second set as they raced to an initial 7-4 lead.  The Kazakh game was riddled with several unforced mistakes, allowing the Vietnamese scoring opportunities to widen the margin to 16-7 at the second technical timeout. However, the Kazakhs could not make use of the intermission as they still found the rivals too strong defensively. Vietnam clinched the entirely one-sided set 25-14.

The third set was closely-contested as Kazakhstan tried hard to come back as they trailed with just two points behind at 7-9. Anastassiya Rostovchshikov and Zarina Sitkazinova took turns firing their fine attacks, but Vietnam set up impregnable walls, foiling the Kazakhs’ attacking efforts. Leading 23-15 for good, Vietnam went on their fine form to capture the set 25-15 and match.

With the comfortable win, Vietnam advance to contest the 5th-8th playoffs on Saturday, while Kazakhstan will compete in the final 9th-10th playoff on the same day.
