YOUNG KOREA SUCCUMB TO 0-3 DEFEAT TO IN-FORM VIETNAM IN 5TH-6TH PLAYOFF

Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, September 23, 2018 – Vietnam pulled off a sensational straight-set 25-22 25-10 25-16 victory over young Korea to return with the 5th place at the 6th AVC Cup for Women at the Chartchai Hall here on Sunday.

Tran Thi Thanh Thuy led Vietnam with 16 points including 13 kills from 27 attempts, one block and 2 aces, while Ha Hyejin chipped in with 12 points for Korea including 9 attacks from 28 attempts.

For Vietnam, the well-earned fifth place was a better performance than the 7th position they had achieved at the previous episode two years ago in Vinh Phuc, Vietnam, while Korea, despite the loss, also made the grade with the 6th place they won here in Nakhon Ratchasima as they finished a disappointing 8th place in Vietnam.

Vietnam, 6th at the recent 18th Asian Games in Indonesia, had to battle hard in the opening set as Korea, led by a superb trio of Ha Hyejin, An Hyejin and Go Yerim, provided power through their exceptional attacks to narrowly lead 10-9 and the Koreans widened the gap to 20-19 after Ha produced great serves and fine attacks which allowed the rivals tough times receiving. Vietnam struck back gallantly, with scintillating blocks and Tran Thi Thanh Thuy uncorking a series of devastatingly for the Vietnam’s hard-fought 25-22 win.

The second set turned out to be a completely one-sided affair when the Koreans, despite putting up a fierce fight, had no answer with the Vietnamese onslaughts led by the 190cm Tran Thi Than Thuy, Dang Thi Kim Thanh and Bui Thi Nga. Vietnam sealed the easy set 25-10.

Winning the first two sets boosted the Vietnam’s confidence as they still put in good show in the third set which was a procession towards victory. Leading for good 10-3, Vietnam mixed extreme power through Tran Thi Thanh Thuy’s deadly spikes with some lovely touches to leave the Koreans bewildered. Vietnam advanced with an eight-point advantage at 24-16 before winning one last point through a sharp precision-on-the-line spike to win the comfortable set 25-16, match and the 5th position.
