APPETITE FOR HOSTING ELITE FIVB EVENTS GREATER THAN EVER IN CHINA

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 13, 2018 – FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° met with a delegation from the Chinese Volleyball Association (CVA), led by its Vice-President, Li Quanqiang, this week to discuss the development of volleyball and beach volleyball in the country.

The relationship between China and the FIVB has been greatly enhanced under the leadership of President Ary Graça. In 2015, he visited China to prospect the opportunity of growing the sport within China. Since then, the FIVB President has visited the country three times, including last year when he met with the President of the Chinese Olympic Committee and Director of the State General Administration of Sports, Gou Zhongwen, to discuss greater collaboration between the FIVB and the CVA. Following the FIVB President’s visits to China and increased governmental support, the number of volleyball and beach volleyball events hosted by China has grown drastically, and in October 2018, the FIVB signed a worldwide contract for 4 years with Ganten Water, China’s leading mineral water company.

During the 2018-2019 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, China is staging eight events; three 4-star, one 3-star and four 2-star competitions, and the prize money for these events totals $1.175 million USD. Last month China was named as host of the first ever Olympic Beach Volleyball Qualifying Tournament, which will take place from 18-22 September 2019. The event will provide another chance for the National Olympic Committee of China and other NOCs to earn two quota places per gender for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

China is also looking to host other high-profile events in the coming years, including future FIVB World Championships, and an FIVB delegation has already been invited to visit the country’s facilities.

Following the meeting FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said:

“China is a strong and reliable partner for the FIVB, both in volleyball and beach volleyball. We recognise and praise the country’s strong commitment to the promotion of beach volleyball. This season, China is organising more beach volleyball World Tour events than anyone else, and they are also going to host the inaugural FIVB Tokyo 2020 Olympic Beach Volleyball Qualifying Tournament next year.

“I believe that China has the capacity to stage 5-star World Tour tournaments and the FIVB World Championships in the future and we appreciate the enthusiasm and dedication of the Chinese Volleyball Association in ensuring the development of our beloved sport in the country.”
