CAROL, FE GARAY LEAD PRAIA CLUBE PAST SUPREME
Shaoxing, China, December 4, 2018 – Ana Carolina Da Silva and Fernanda Rodrigues led Brazil’s Praia Clube in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship opener with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-14) win over Thailand’s Supreme Chonburi.
Carol and Fe Garay netted 13 points apiece to lead the Brazilian club in scoring, while Thai stars Pleumjit Thinkaow and Wilavan Apinyapong led their side with 12 and nine points, respectively.
Praia Clube setter Carli Lloyd got her team-mates involved on offence, dishing out excellent sets to Nicole Fawcett and Fabiana Claudino, who chipped in 12 and 10 points to the winning cause.
Praia Clube setter Carli Lloyd made three blocks to help her team in their 3-0 win over Supreme Chonburi.
Praia Clube got off to a hot start, while Supreme Chonburi struggled to get their offence going without their main setter Soraya Phomla. Thai middle blocker Pleumjit took charge and led her team to cut down the lead to within one point at 23-22, but the Brazilian club managed to earn the last two points to seal the opening set at 25-22.
Carol and Fawcett then got into a scoring rhythm, making Praia Club more difficult to counter on offence in the second and third sets. Their net defence was also strengthened with Carol and Lloyd taking care of more than half of their team’s 10 blocks in the match.
Praia Clube coach Paulo Barros Junior: “It was a good win. We started a little bit nervous in the first set because we are not familiar with our opponent, but when we managed to win that then it became easier for us to win the next two sets. We had good reception and a good offensive system.”
Praia Clube captain Fabiana Claudino: “It was good start. The first match is always difficult but the team showed good volleyball. We played well tactically which helped our attackers to be in good position.”
Supreme Chonburi coach Nataphon Srisamutnak: “We didn’t have our first setter (Soraya Phomla) today and she was the missing link in this match. I hope she can play in the next match because she’s very valuable to our system. Hopefully she can return so that we can play better tomorrow.”
Supreme Chonburi captain Wilavan Apinyapong: “It’s really good for our team to play this kind of match to give our young players experience. We tried to play every point but they are very strong. I still feel good about this game because we will gain a lot of experience.”
