FAWCETT’S SOLID OUTING HELPS PRAIA CLUBE BEAT ALTAY
Shaoxing, China, December 5, 2018 – Brazil’s Praia Clube picked up a strong performance from Nicole Fawcett in their 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-17) win against Kazakhstan’s Altay Volleyball Club in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship on Wednesday.
Fawcett displayed an unyielding performance from the attack line, scoring 18 kills out of her total output of 19. Fernanda Rodrigues and Fabiana Claudino played key roles in Praia Clube’s dominant run in the first two sets and gave way to Fawcett to make the finishing touches in their victory. The two former Olympic gold medallists scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Altay Volleyball Club captain Sana Anarkulova topscored for her team with 11 markers, while Azerbaijan star Natalya Mammadova added 10 points.
Praia Clube setter Carli Lloyd gave her hitters an easy task as she distributed her sets well at the start of the first set, with Fe Garay and Fabiana benefitting most from the excellent plays.
Mammadova tried to get her team back in the game with her strong spikes, but Praia Clube managed to contain her spikes later in the game. On the other side of the net, it was Fawcett who relentlessly scored against the Altay defenders.
By the third set, the formidable trio of Fawcett, Fe Garay and Fabiana commanded Praia Clube’s offence, leaving Anarkulova as the only Altay player consistently hitting winners. Fawcett had the final say with a strong swing that closed set and match at 25-17.
Praia Clube coach Paulo Barros Junior: “We had a good performance today. The players were very focused on applying a good tactical system in the match. We had a good serve. Our defence system worked well, our blockers gave their best attackers some trouble. The team is improving and that I think is important for us in this competition.”
Altay Volleyball Club coach Iurii Panchenko: “We played better than yesterday. I hope we can continue improving our performance and get a win. It was very difficult to play a strong opponent like Praia Clube. They have Olympic champions on their side, but today we played much better.”
Altay Volleyball Club captain Sana Anurkulova: “It was a very difficult game for us. Our opponent had a strong block and a powerful serve, so it was hard to play against them. I think we played better in this match than yesterday.”
