GABI’S 28 POINTS LIFT MINAS OVER ZHEJIANG

Shaoxing, China, December 5, 2018 – Gabriela Guimaraes (Gabi) scored 28 points to power Minas Tenis Clube to a 3-1 (25-12, 21-25, 25-10, 25-17) win over Zhejiang Women’s Volleyball Club in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship.

Gabi showed up with a fierce game on Wednesday after a gloomy performance against Volero Le Cannet on opening day. She had 24 spikes, two blocks and two aces to lead Minas, while Liu Yanhan headed the Zhejiang offence with 11 markers.

Minas overwhelmed Zhejiang with a barrage of attacks from Gabi. The home team could only manage to put 12 markers on the board as they struggled with a string of unforced errors.

Zhejiang shifted the momentum to their side and led in the entire second set, but Minas trimmed the advantage to within two points at 23-21. Yang Hanyu’s quick attack put them at set point, until Mara Ferreira Leao’s attack error sent the match to a deadlock at 1-1.

Minas recovered from the setback in the second set and closed the third set with a commanding 25-10 win. In the fourth set, the Chinese squad started strong and a brilliant one-handed set started a good run that gave them a 6-1 edge. Minas responded quickly with a 5-0 run to level the score. Gabi continued to exploit the Zhejiang block to secure the match triumph at 25-17.

Minas Tenis Clube coach Stefano Lavarini: “I am much more satisfied with the performance of my team than yesterday. My team entered the court with a different attitude, which showed our kind of volleyball. In spite of making a lot of mistakes in the second set, they still showed great attitude on the court. Gabi was superb today!”

Minas Tenis Clube captain Carol Gattaz: “We played very well. We made a lot of mistakes in the second set, which was not very common. After that set, we found our rhythm and won.

“We know VakifBank is a very good team, we are going to prepare to fight the best way we can.”

Zhejiang Women’s Volleyball Club coach Wang Hebin: “We tried our best in this match even though we know that Minas is a strong team. I tried to see the best combination of players because we have new members in the team. This is also to prepare us for the next match.”

Zhejiang Women’s Volleyball Club captain Wang Na: “We practiced on our cohesiveness this morning but we still have problems with our consistency. We have new team members who are not yet familiar with our system, so we need to start with the basics.”
