LIU’S 34 POINTS PROPEL ZHEJIANG TO FIVE-SET WIN OVER VOLERO

Shaoxing, China, December 7, 2018 – Liu Yanhan boosted Zhejiang Women’s Volleyball Team’s 3-2 (16-25, 25-19, 19-25, 26-24, 16-14) win over Volero Le Cannet in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship on Friday.

Liu delighted the home fans with a prolific night in recording 26 spikes, six blocks and two service aces, guiding her team to its first victory in the tournament. Her team-mates Yang Hanyu and Ren Kaiyi 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Volero had notable performances from four players who all scored in double figures. Gergana Dimitrova led the team with 18 points, Angelina Lazarenko with 17 points, and Ana Bjelica and Laura Unternahrer each had 15 markers.

Unternahrer and Bjelica made their trips to the service line worthwhile, combining for six aces in the first set, which easily intimidated their defenders. The home team had limited options then on offence, as Liu was the lone player consistent with scoring. Volero easily took the first set at 25-16.

Liu commanded the attacks and Yang reinforced net defence of Zhejiang, enabling them to run their plays with confidence. Liu kept the crowd on their feet as she helped the team take the win in the second set 25-19.

Volero bounced back with a 25-19 win, while Zhejiang fought for a match extension with a tight 26-24 finish in the fourth set. By the fifth set, most balls were given to Liu and she responded positively strong attacks and aces that gave the home team the lead. Volero levelled the score at 14-all, until their last two attacks went out of bounds, giving away set and match to the home team 16-14.

Zhejiang Women’s Volleyball Club coach Wang Hebin: “It’s really a tough game. There’s a big gap between my team and Volero Le Cannet in terms of strength. I do not think we have that cohesiveness yet, but it is our duty to always do our best. All the players did a good job today.

“We do not have a deep bench, but there are also good things in this team, like Liu Yanhan who did i great job in crucial situations.”

Zhejiang Women’s Volleyball Club player Liu Yanhan: “It was not easy to win this game. We supported each other and tried our best to follow the instructions of our coach. In the end we won the game and we are so happy for this.”

Volero Le Cannet captain Laura Unternahrer: “It’s frustrating that we could not come up with a win against a team that we have a chance to beat. I hope we can play better tomorrow and win at least a game.

“It’s heartbreaking to give everything and in the end we lose by two points, but this is sport and it happens, so we just have to think about the match tomorrow and give our best.”
