PREPARATIONS FOR TOKYO 2020 DISCUSSED AT RULES OF THE GAME AND REFEREEING COMMISSION
Lausanne, Switzerland, December 13, 2018 – The FIVB Rules of the Game and Refereeing Commission met yesterday to discuss preparations for the next Olympic Games as well as other key FIVB events.
The Commission has also evaluated the 2018 VNL Refereeing Report and prepared proposals from several working groups to be presented at the next FIVB Board of Administration meeting. These working groups included Refereeing Categorisation and Statistics, Referee Education and Teaching Material, Rules of the Game and Regulations, and Beach Volleyball matters.
The continuous importance of introducing new technology and maximising the Challenge System was also raised during the meeting as the FIVB works hard to ensure the fairness of the game for the benefit of all athletes. During the 2018 FIVB Volleyball World Championships, the Challenge System showed great results with 430 challenges requested during the women’s edition (157 successful, 37% success rate), and 586 challenges requested during the men’s tournament (237 successful, 40% success rate). Earlier this year, the Volleyball Nations League showed similarly positive results, with a 41.95% success rate in the women’s edition, and just under 40% in the men’s. The Commission has also begun looking at the possibility of instigating professional referees for its major events who will be fully dedicated to volleyball refereeing as their main job.
During the meeting FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° said:
“The Rules of the Game and Refereeing Commission is crucial in ensuring the high quality of our refereeing and making sure the rules of the game are constantly updated to keep up with innovation and maintain spectator appeal. The work done by this Commission is exceptional and is reflected in the performances of our referees, which I believe is at least 100% better than the standard we had in the past.
“We are committed to introducing new technology on court as well as preparing our referees as well as possible before our biggest events, which includes the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.”
The FIVB Commission meetings are being held in December, January and February.
