Hong Kong, August 13, 2024 – The 2024 Asian Eastern Zonal Women’s Volleyball Championship, organized by the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China, commenced on Tuesday at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
Hosts Hong Kong, China pulled off dramatic 3-1 win against Mongolia under the support of local fans. Hong Kong, China, with outside hitter Chim Wing Lam and opposite Shum Lam scoring a match-high 16 point each, combined with tenacious defence and solid blocking to power past Mongolia 25-20, 25-14, 21-25, 25-19 in the last match on Tuesday.
Captain Yu Ying Chi expressed post-match, “The team employed a strategy of dynamic tactics and targeted blocking to secure the first two sets. Despite some instability in passing and defence in the third set, they promptly adjusted to claim victory in the fourth set.”
Prior to this match, the organizing committee conducted an Opening Ceremony. Jointly presiding over the ceremony were Control Committee President Mr Cai Yi and Mr Chiu Man Hin, Chairperson of Executive Committee of Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China. Guest of honors included Ms Marina Tsui, Executive Chairperson of Organizing Committee of 2024 Asian Eastern Zonal Women’s Volleyball Championship, Mr. Ko Pui Chung, representative of the Main Sponsor, Hong Kong Parkview, and Mr. Huang Huen Ru, representative of Safety Godown Representative, the Supporting Partner, to join the inauguration of this event.
Chinese Taipei
This tournament features 8 participating teams consisting of Hong Kong China, Korea, Mongolia, DPR Korea in Group A, and China, Japan, Macau China, and Chinese Taipei in Group B.
The participating eight teams will play a group round-robin competition, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals and finals. Classification matches will also be held for lower-ranked sides for 5th-8th places.
In the opening match, China, leveraging their height advantage, secured a resounding victory over Macau, China with a score of 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-8) through exceptional serving, spiking, and blocking.
The second match featured Japan against Chinese Taipei which saw the former emerge victorious with resilient defence and varied offensive plays, winning in straight set 25-15, 25-20, 25-15.
The subsequent match, DPR Korea faced off against Korea. Despite losing the first set in a hard-fought battle that went into extra points, DPR Korea, led by outside hitter Kim Hyon Ju who scored a game-high 32 points, managed to a 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-18, 27-25) comeback win and secure their first win of the tournament.
