Manama, Bahrain, May 14, 2023 – Suntory Sunbirds overpowered Diamond Food Fine Chef-Air Force in straight sets 25-17, 26-24, 25-19 for their first win in Pool C in the 2023 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship at Issa Bin Rashed Hall 1 on Sunday.
Suntory Sunbirds, which finished second at the previous edition in 2022 in Tehran, put their acts together and attacked well to win the first set 25-17 against Diamond Food Fine Chef-Air Force, which aimed to better their performance in line with its developmental plan.
The second set was a different script as Diamond Food took command from the very beginning, with Chaiw Thungkham and Eva Dias De Souza attacking devastatingly. As the Thais briefly struggled to find their form at the near end of the set, Suntory Sunbirds shone through their splendid offensive tactics and cruised on to a hard-fought 26-24 win.
The Japanese frustrated Diamond Food’s defense with various strategies in the third set for an initial 8-4 lead. Kota Yamamura, head coach of Suntory Sunbirds, had confidence in his players as they extended the lead to 16-11. The Thai outfits found Suntory Sunbirds, strengthened by hard-attacking Dmitriy Muserski, an impossible nut to crack and went down 19-25 in the third set.
