Manila, Philippines, May 21, 2024 – Teams from Australia, Hong Kong China, Indonesia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and hosts Philippines convened at the General Technical Meeting ahead of the competition at the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.
The third edition of the competition, to be held in Manila’s historic Rizal Memorial Coliseum from May 22-29, 2024, shall mark the first event to kick off the 2024 AVC volleyball season.
“After the signing of contract between AVC and Volleyball World last year, the AVC Challenge Cup will be one of the challenging and exciting AVC tournaments. Among 10 participating national teams, the top teams of previous AVC Challenger Cup, high ranking teams of AVC and the host will have chances to show their performance,” said AVC President Madame Rita Subowo in her message to the participating teams, officials, and staff.
“For participating teams, this is the good opportunity to show your best performance to be the only one representative of AVC National Federations to participate in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Challenger Cup coming July 2024,” Madame Subowo added.
Tuesday evening’s meeting opened with a message from the president of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation Mr Ramon Suzara as he welcomed the AVC Control Committee and the participating teams to “enjoy their stay and play at their best level in the competition.”
“The PNVF is always ready to share the Filipinos’ trademark hospitality with a smile, along with our best service level as a Local Organizing Committee with each event that we host,” he added, as the Philippines is also set to host the Volleyball World Challenger Cup for Women.
Vietnam return to the competition in full force, sending their strongest squad to defend their title and strengthen their bid for another appearance at the VW Challenger Cup.
The 2023 runners-up Indonesia and third-placers Chinese Taipei are fielding in younger players in the mix. Hong Kong China and India will compete for the third consecutive time, while Kazakhstan mark their debut appearance in the competition in Manila.
The Preliminary Round commences on Wednesday with Pool A (PHI, TPE, IND, IRI, AUS) and Pool B (VIE, INA, KAZ, SGP, HKG) competing in respective groups, before heading into a rest and recovery day on Monday, May 27.
The top two teams per pool will comprise the Final Four to compete in the semi-finals on Tuesday, May 28, while the remaining teams look for their best possible finish with the 5th-8th semi-finals. The least-ranked team per pool will face off in the classification match for 9th-10th places.
The finals are set on Wednesday, May 29, where the eventual champions earn the right to return to Manila, as they confirm their slot for the Volleyball World Challenger Cup, scheduled from July 4-7, 2024.
