Manila, Philippines, May 25, 2024 – The home crowd at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum celebrated along with Philippines after a 3-0 defeat (25-16, 25-13, 25-15) of Iran in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.
The nightcap event on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum extended the Philippines’ streak to three wins at hand.
Anne Angel Canino scored 16 points, with Cherry Ann Rondina adding another 12 markers in the victory.
The home team sprung to a solid start. They performed well from the service line, they received well and they ran their counter-attack with much success. They played a nearly flawless first set, minimizing and managing their error count.
The Philippines loaded the wings with Canino. As they played along in rallies, they were able to open up the offense, running the backline attack Rondina.
Iran tried to keep their offense running, enabling captain Aytak Salamat on attack. Elaheh Poorsaleh also posted some successful swings. The team tried to establish their system, but they could not seem to settle into their tempo. They played on and off, without finding or capitalizing on breaks that could have changed the narrative.
Meanwhile, the hosts’ momentum peaked by the third set, with Rondina sparking the offense with breathtaking sequences.
Coach Jorge Souza De Brito signaled in a different roster and utilized his bench, with each player clocking in quality minutes and points.
The Philippines will face Chinese Taipei in Sunday’s nightcap at 19:00. Iran will face Australia in the earlier match scheduled at 16:00. All times local.
