Jiangmen, China, June 30, 2024 – A successful final venue inspection, the completed Referee & VIS Clinic and General Technical Meeting on Sunday all made the 22nd Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship at Jiangmen Sports Center Gymnasium get set to burst into action-packed encounters.
Control Committee Chairman Mr Cai Yi and AVC Coordinator Mr Shanrit Wongprasert, himself AVC Executive Director, jointly presided over the Sunday’s General Technical Meeting. All CC Members, 12 accompanying referees, the organisers, team officials from 12 teams participating in the topflight championship, which serves as the Asian qualification for the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship, assembled in the Meeting Room 1 inside Huabao Sports Exhibition Hotel here for the meeting, which is aimed to check if all is set for the nine-day championship.
Mr Cai Yi welcomed all participating teams and wished them a nice stay in Jiangmen. He introduced all CC Members to the meeting, while Referee Delegate Mr Chang Chin Jong did likewise for the referee side.
Local organizing committee and team officials attending the meeting were also asked for self introduction.
After that, on behalf of AVC President Mrs Rita Subowo, Mr Shanrit delivered an opening speech, extending his great gratitude to China Volleyball Association and Jiangmen City for their great contributions in hosting this prestigious tournament. He also informed all participating teams about the quotas for Asian teams to qualify for the next year’s U21 World Championship.
“The Asian Women’s U20 Championship here will serve as the Asian qualification for the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship and top four teams are assured of securing their berths in the next year’s World Championship. However, it is likely that China, as current world champions, will automatically qualify for the World Championship, giving the other Asian teams opportunities to fight for four spots in the next year’s World Championship,” he said.
A strong field of 12 teams will strut their stuff in Jiangmen, with Pool A comprising China, Kazakhstan and Australia. Defending champions Japan, India and Hong Kong, China are in Pool B, while Pool C consists of Thailand, Vietnam and Iran. Pool D features Korea, Chinese Taipei and New Zealand.
During the meeting, Technical Delegate Dr Eom Han-Joo, himself Chairman of the AVC Sports Events Council, informed all participating teams crucial technical matters including eligibility of players and officials, place of non-playing teams, position of team statisticians and video cameras.
Referee Delegate Mr Chang Chin Jong from Chinese Taipei informed them about the rules of the game to be applied in this championship, discipline on the court, match protocol and the Video Challenge System.
Press Delegate Mr Preechachan Wiriyanupappong informed team head coaches about the press operations in this championship including the interviews at the Mixed Zone, adding that daily bulletin will be directly forwarded to teams’ email addresses submitted to VIS Delegate Mr Cai Yong.
Mr Shanrit concluded the meeting, praising CVA and Jiangmen City for their excellent organization. He insisted that transportation for teams to and from the hotel is not necessary because the gymnasium is just a stone’s throw from the Official Hotel. From hotel, teams can spend only a few minutes to enter the gymnasium. Finally, he wished all teams the very best of luck and CVA and Jiangmen City a great success in hosting this championship.
The meeting ended on positive note, with team officials clearly understanding the relevant competition matters and ready to kick off their campaigns the following day. Control Committee Members and accompanying referees gathered for group photo, while attendants also joined the photo opportunity in this meeting.
Earlier, all 12 accompanying referees who will officiate at this competition, set to be held at the 8,500-seater gymnasium here from July 1 to 9, have already been announced.
Referring to the decision made at the 2016 AVC Board of Administration Meeting, all NFs sending their teams to participate in any Asian Volleyball Championship must each submit three international or candidate referees to AVC in order that the AVC Referees Committee, chaired by Mr Songsak Chareonpong, will thoroughly consider before making a final decision who will be named the accompanying referee of each participating team.

These referees attended the Referee & VIS Clinic, theoretically and practically, on Sunday. Referee Delegate Mr Chang Chin Jong and Referee Sub Committee Mr Wang Ning from China instructed them in the morning theoretical session at the meeting room inside the Jiangmen Sports Center Gymnasium, with Court & Referee Managers & Supervisors, Announcers, Scorers, Line judges, Moppers, Ball retrievers and VIS staff in attendance.
The clinic had been designed to get these active referees well-prepared for this championship and provide them necessary information on rules and regulations, match control techniques and their awareness and response to the Challenge System.
The practical part of the Referee & VIS Clinic was held later at noon, while those who attended the theoretical session earlier had been assigned to officiate in a match performed by two demonstration teams. This was to improve the referees’ decision making and their quality of officiating while they are on duty during the matchday between July 1 and 9.
