Jiangmen, China, July 6, 2024 – Chinese Taipei outperformed India in comfortable straight sets 25-15, 25-20, 25-13 in the round of last 8 to finish third place in Pool F in the 22nd Asian Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship at the Jiangmen Sports Center Gymnasium here on Saturday.
Outside hitter Hsu Fang-Min chipped in 18 points from 17 kills and one ace for Chinese Taipei, while opposite Chang Yi-Chi and outside hitter HJsu Heng-Yun contributed 12 and 10 points respectively. Outside hitter Kavita led India with 12 points including 10 kills from 20 attempts.
Chinese Taipei started solidly, with opposites Hsu Fang-Min and Chang Yi-Chi leading the team’s offense with their powerful attacks to set an early pace with a four-point advantage at 11-7. After that, they completely took control as India struggled to hit form and trailed far behind 13-21. Key players Kavita, who played in the India senior national team at the AVC Challenge Cup early this year in Philippines, and Ananthi Arasu became the backbones of the team penetrating the Taiwanese defence with fine attacks to give some crucial points to the team.
However, the Indian effort did not pay off its dividends as Chinese Taipei continued their great form. Outside hitter Hsu Heng-Yun delivered the set point 24-15 to the team before Hsu Fang-Min hammered an off-the-block kill for the Chinese Tai’s comfortable 25-15 win.
In the second set, India fought back, allowing Chinese Taipei some scoring difficulties. Both sides were leveled at 10-10 and 15-15, but Chinese Taipei had more in their tank and they went ahead 22-19, courtesy of their combination attacks from Hsu Heng-Yun, Hsu Fang-Min and power-filled jump serves from Hsu Fang-Hin. As India tried hard to claw their way back into game, Chinese Taipei grew in confidence, attacking from every corner and allowing the Indians only one more point to wrap up the set 25-20.
The third set turned out to be more comfortable for Chinese Taipei. Although both sides performed well at the beginning which saw Chinese Taipei take a narrow 8-6 lead, India dropped from their best and the rivals seized the opportunity to go on their kills and blocks. Chinese Taipei captured the lead for good at 20-12 and never looked back from then on to win the third set 25-13 and match.
Chinese Taipei earlier went down in straight sets to Japan in their first Pool F encounter on Friday, with India succumbing to straight-set loss to Korea. Chinese Taipei and India finished 3rd and 4th places in Pool F to be relegated to classification round for 5th-8th places.
