Male, Maldives, July 18, 2024 – The first day of the CAVA Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship ended with exciting duels, with Kyrgyzstan emerging victorious against hosts Maldives in convincing straight sets and Sri Lanka demolishing Nepal in dramatic four-setter.
In the first match, Kyrgyzstan, strengthened by Rasulbek Kyzy Roza, pulled off a comfortable 25-11, 25-11, 25-17 win against the host side.
Rasulbek Kyzy Roza chipped in with 13 points including 12 kills from 28 attempts for Kyrgyzstan, while Solah Maaya Hussain scored 12 points on the Maldives’ loss.
The second encounter saw Sri Lanka outplay Nepal in thrilling four sets 25-20, 24-26, 25-11, 25-18.
Herath M. Chathuri P.A. delivered 18 points from 16 kills and 2 aces for Sri Lanka, while Budha Magar Salina led Nepal with a match-high 20 points including 19 kills from 58 attempts.
On Friday, Maldives will take on Sri Lanka and Nepal go up against Kyrgyzstan.
The championship, which spans six days, features teams from the Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan to vie for top honour. These teams are competing not only for the championship title but also to empower their Women’s U20 squads for a promising future in the sport.
The opening ceremony, held at 8:00pm local time after the first match, was graced by prominent figures. The Chief Guest, Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Mr Abdulla Raafiu, emphasized the importance of unity among National Federations (NFs) and mutual support for the development of volleyball in the region. He affirmed the Maldives’ commitment to becoming a development partner in organizing and hosting future CAVA events.
Mr Mohammed Latheef, President of Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) and the Volleyball Association of the Maldives (VAM), echoed these sentiments. He stated, “I urge each and every player to uphold the values of the FIVB and to compete with the highest level of skill, determination, and integrity. Your dedication and hard work have brought you to this stage, and I am confident that you will inspire us all with your remarkable performances.”
