Male, Maldives, July 19, 2024 – The second day of the CAVA Women’s U20 Volleyball Championship showcased exceptional performances from Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan with their back-to-back wins on Friday, with the former defeating hosts Maldives and the latter overcoming Nepal in straight sets.
The day’s opening match between Sri Lanka and Maldives turned out to be a totally lopsided affair as the strong visitors mercilessly crushed the host side 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-16) in 54 minutes.
Herath M. Chathuri P.A. chipped in 13 points, all in attack, for Sri Lanka, while Solah Maaya Hussain led Maldives with 10 points including 9 attacks from 35 attempts.
In the second encounter, Kyrgyzstan struggled to beat Nepal in hard-fought three-setter 27-25, 25-23, 25-17 in 78 minutes.
Rasulbek Kyzy Roza scored a match-high 20 points from 17 kills and 3 aces for Kyrgyzstan, while Budha Magar Salina claimed 17 points on the Nepal’s loss.
After two days in Male City, Kyrgyzstan stay atop the four-team standing with six points from two consecutive wins and without dropping a single set. Sri Lanka also had six points from two wins in a row to come in second spot. Nepal and Maldives have yet won a match to trail in third and fourth places respectively.
The championship is a six-day event featuring intense competition among the region’s top young volleyball talents. The round-robin contest will continue through Saturday, July 20, the last day of the single round robin, as teams return to the court to continue their quest for volleyball supremacy. During this phase, teams are battling fiercely to secure the best possible positions in the rankings.
With the preliminary rounds heating up, the upcoming matches promise to deliver more thrilling moments and high-level volleyball as teams strive to climb the ranking table. The first-ranked team will then fight it out with the fourth-placed team, with the second-placed finishers challenging the third-placed side in the semifinals on Monday, July 22.
In a well-deserved break, all participating teams will enjoy a rest day on July 21. They will have the opportunity to explore the stunning tourist attractions of Male City, offering them a glimpse of the local culture and natural beauty of the Maldives.
