Volleyball Australia hosted a highly-beneficial development and selection camp for the Australian U20 Men’s squad on 18-24 November at the AIS in Canberra.

The camp combined high-level training, development activities led by U20 head coach Brendan Garlick, and participation in the ACT Good Neighbour Volleyball Tournament, where athletes competed in the Men’s Honours division.

The camp brought together 40 athletes from across Australia, including current Australian Volleyball Academy (AVA) athletes and several visiting Volleyroos squad members.

These athletes were organised into four teams for the tournament, providing a unique opportunity to showcase their skills in a competitive environment. Six developing coaches were also in attendance, working alongside Garlick.

“With Indoor Volleyball guaranteed a Men’s team at the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games, it is critical that our Junior National team athletes are being exposed to environments and opportunities that strongly reflect competing at an international level,” said Garlick. “When we compete in the Asian region, we are competing against the best athletes in Asia from multiple countries who come through an indoor pathway from a very young age and so our first goal right now is to master competing successfully in Asia.

“With multiple Asian countries consistently medalling at U19 and U21 World Championships, this is a difficult task, but this camp has shown that we have the physicality and an improved level of tactical awareness for this age that will be the cornerstone to future success.”

Volleyroos Men’s Head Coach, Dan Ilott, attended the camp with support from the FIVB empowerment funding, which aids in the development of the national program. Reflecting on the camp’s significance, Ilott said opportunities like this will have a cumulative effect on the road to 2032.

“This camp is a great opportunity for us to work with the best athletes from across the country to develop their skills, tactics, and mentality for the Volleyroos development program,” he said. “The athletes here this week are in the perfect age window for representing Australia at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, and we are focused on the development opportunities we can provide for our Volleyroos for 2032 program.

“What I really like about this camp is that we also get to see the guys compete in the Good Neighbour tournament against some of the best men’s teams from around the country.

“It is so important for the athletes’ development that we find good quality competitive opportunities as well as training and development camps.”

This camp underscored Volleyball Australia’s commitment to fostering the next generation of athletes and aligning their development with long-term goals, including success on the international stage and representation at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Alongside the men’s teams, the Australian Volleyball Academy proudly fielded a women’s team in the Honours Division at the ACT Good Neighbour Volleyball Tournament. Demonstrating exceptional skill, the women’s team triumphed and were crowned champions of the division.

Volleyball Australia’s national programs are supported by FIVB Volleyball Empowerment, helping our teams and athletes reach their full potential and achieve their goals.
