Vero Volley, Imoco and Tianjin also win their opening matches in Hangzhou

The opening day of the 2024 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship in Hangzhou, China produced four straight-setters. Italy’s Numia Vero Volley Milan and Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano, Japan’s NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki and China’s Tianjin Bohai Bank all swept their opening matches on Tuesday. 

NEC’s Lorrayna Da Silva put away 21 points over three sets and topped the championship’s scorers’ chart at the end of day one.

Pool A

In the tournament opener on Tuesday morning, Numia Vero Volley Milan achieved a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 27-25) victory over Brazil’s Gerdau Minas Belo Horizonte. The scoring race between the two opposites – Paola Egonu and Kisy Nascimento – ended with a tie as they finished on a match-high 18 points each. Egonu contributed two aces and two kill blocks towards the European team’s success, while Kisy’s tally included two blocks and one ace. Meanwhile, Gerdau Minas’s star middle blocker and captain Thaisa Menezes impressed with five aces during the match.

In the last match of the first competition day, tournament hosts Tianjin Bohai Bank claimed a solid 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-15) win over Egypt’s Zamalek Giza. Three Tianjin players dipped into the double digits in scoring. Wang Yizhu led the way with 17 points, captain Li Yingying added another 16, while Chen Boya finished with 15. Zamalek’s most prolific player, Brazilian outside hitter Milca Lubieska da Silva, aced four times to finish with a total of 14 points.

Pool B

With outstanding blocking effort and too many unforced errors by the opponents, Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano mastered a 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-15) sweep of their opener against Brazil’s Dentil Praia Clube Uberlandia. The European team’s middle blocker Sarah Fahr and Brazilian outside hitter Gabriela Guimaraes led the squad with 12 points, including three kill blocks, each. Chinese outside Zhu Ting and Swedish opposite Isabelle Haak added another 11 points apiece, while Dentil Praia’s Russian outside Sofya Kuznetsova scored a match-high 14 points. Her American cross-court teammate Payton Caffrey also reached the double digits with 10 points, including three aces.

Later on Tuesday, NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki won the all-Asian clash with Vietnam’s LP Bank Ninh Binh. Dominating in offence, the Japanese team delivered an emphatic 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-13) shutout. Brazilian opposite Lorrayna Da Silva hammered out an impressive match high of 21 points, including two aces and a kill block, thus emerging as the best scorer of the day. Outsides Ajcharaporn Kongyot of Thailand and Yoshino Sato added 12 points apiece towards the victory. LP Bank’s opposite Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen raised three kill blocks towards a 15-point tally.
