Following the successful conclusion of the 2024 Australian Volleyball Schools Cup on the Gold Coast, Volleyball Australia continued its tradition of delivering an extensive December camps program, building on the success of 2023.
Three camps were staged for boys and girls across Queensland, held in Toowoomba, Runaway Bay and Tallebudgera. The Tallebudgera camp featured beach volleyball sessions at various Gold Coast beaches, providing a well-rounded experience for participants.
Throughout these three camps, Volleyball Australia staff worked with over 350 athletes and 70 coaches, delivering daily court sessions on both indoor and beach courts. The program also included seminars and activities focused on athlete and coach development.
With another exciting year ahead in 2025, one of the primary focuses of these camp was to bring together our U16 boys and girls for their first time as part of the Pre-Youth National Squad.
This gathering marked an important step in their preparation for the 2nd U16 Asian Volleyball Championships, set to take place in 2025. The camp provided an invaluable opportunity for these young athletes to train, bond as a team and begin building the foundations necessary for competing at an elite level on the international stage.
Alongside skill development and tactical training, the camp emphasised fostering teamwork, resilience, and a shared sense of purpose, ensuring the squad is ready to represent Australia with pride and determination.
The squad will undergo final selections in April 2025, where 12 athletes will be chosen to represent Australia at the Asian Championships.
Supporting the camps were Dan Ilott, Brendan Garlick and Russell Borgeaud, coaches of the Volleyroos Men’s and Women’s teams, who led targeted development sessions as part of the Volleyroos for 2032 Talent Development Program. This initiative was made possible through the FIVB Empowerment Funding, which supports the delivery of athlete and coach development activities for Volleyball Australia.
Coach Borgeaud praised the facilities at the Toowoomba Camp, highlighting their suitability for future Volleyroos development camps.
“The Coach and Athlete Development programs are essential for our ongoing success, particularly as we look towards leveraging the legacy of the Brisbane 2032 Olympics for both athlete and coach development,” said Borgeaud. “The high calibre of athletes present at the camps indicate a promising future for the sport.
“The success of these development opportunities would not have been possible without the dedication and involvement of numerous volunteer Australian coaches, to whom we express our sincere gratitude for their commitment and participation.”
Volleyball Australia would like to thank the City of Gold Coast, Gold Coast Recreational Precinct, Parklands Beach Volleyball, Gold Coast Performance Centre and The Glennie School for their support in our December activities.
Volleyball Australia’s national programs are supported by FIVB Volleyball Empowerment, helping our teams and athletes reach their full potential and achieve their goals.
