2025 IN PREVIEW: THAILAND TO WELCOME WORLD’S BEST 32 WOMEN’S TEAMS THIS SUMMER

The first edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship after the format changes will take place from 22 August to 7 September

  • The 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship will be held in Thailand
  • The competition will be played under a new format with 32 teams participating
  • A total of 64 matches will be played in Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phuket and Chiang Mai

The 20th edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championships will take place in 2025. It will be organized in four cities in Thailand – Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phuket and Chiang Mai – from 22 August to 7 September. It will be the first edition after the recently adopted changes in the format and in the periodicity of the World Championships.

For the first time, the event will be held in an odd year. All editions from the first one in 1952 to the nineteenth in 2022 were played once every four years. Now it will be three years from the previous edition, after which the World Championships will be organized once every two years. For the first time, 32 teams will participate in the tournament (previously 24 teams competed).

Also for the first time, the event will be played in Southeast Asia.

Thailand, as tournament hosts, and Serbia (pictured with the trophy in the main photo), as defending champions, were automatically qualified. Another 15 spots, three per continental confederation, were awarded through the continental championships in 2023. Kenya, Egypt and Cameroon qualified from Africa, China, Japan and Vietnam – from Asia, Türkiye, the Netherlands and Italy – from Europe, the Dominican Republic, USA and Canada – from the NORCECA region, and Brazil, Argentina and Colombia – from South America.

The other 15 spots were granted to the highest placed teams (not yet qualified) in the FIVB World Ranking as of 30 August, 2024: Poland, Germany, Belgium, Czechia, Puerto Rico, Ukraine, France, Bulgaria, Cuba, Sweden, Mexico, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain and Greece.

The 32 qualified teams were drawn into eight single round-robin pools of four:

Pool A: Thailand, Netherlands, Sweden, Egypt in Bangkok

Pool B: Italy, Belgium, Cuba, Slovakia in Phuket

Pool C: Brazil, Puerto Rico, France, Greece in Chiang Mai

Pool D: USA, Czechia, Argentina, Slovenia in Nakhon Ratchasima

Pool E: Türkiye, Canada, Bulgaria, Spain in Nakhon Ratchasima

Pool F: China, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Mexico in Chiang Mai

Pool G: Poland, Germany, Kenya, Vietnam in Phuket

Pool H: Japan, Serbia, Ukraine, Cameroon in Bangkok

The top two teams in the final standings of each pool will advance to the eighthfinals. The knockout stage of the competition will then continue with quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches. All playoff matches will be contested in Bangkok. A total of 64 games will be played during the 2025 World Championship.
