Power of volleyball to make the world a better place on full display at groundbreaking mass participation league in India
The stage is set for the Brahmaputra Volleyball League (BVL) Season 5 Super League Finals, taking place from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 January at the Tezpur Polo Ground in Assam.
This landmark event, marking the culmination of a season that saw 401 teams competing across over 900 matches, will celebrate the power of grassroots volleyball in India. Moreover, the event will embody the core of the FIVB Strategic Vision 2032; ‘Together as One’, which seeks to better the world through volleyball under four core pillars; Professionalism, Integration, Empowerment and Mass Participation.
Founded in 2020 by the visionary Abhijit Bhattacharya, the BVL has become a catalyst for social change, uniting and empowering diverse communities. The League rapidly grew into a leading initiative for community sport introducing over 10,000 children to volleyball. What began with just 50 teams has become a widespread community within Assam, reflecting FIVB’s key values of collaboration, integration, peace and solidarity. This year’s finals will showcase the top 32 teams in both under-12 and under-16 categories, with the players competing for the ultimate championship title.
The BVL has been officially recognised as a Silver Level Project by the FIVB Volleyball Foundation, which has pledged support across three areas of the league: advancing coaching programmes, enhancing match broadcasting and providing professional expertise to strengthen league operations.
The finals will be attended by a host of global volleyball figures, including Assam’s Sports Minister Nandita Garlosa, FIVB President Fabio Azevedo, Volleyball Foundation Executive Director Elizaveta Bracht, Volleyball Foundation ambassador and former Thailand women’s national volleyball team player Nootsara Tomkom and Olympic Champion Vladimir Grbić, who will also lead coaching clinics in Tezpur ahead of the finals. Also joining the event will be FIVB Volleyball Empowerment and NF Relations Head Hitesh Malhotra.
Adding to the occasion, the finals will feature the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the BVL and the Dani Foundation, a philanthropic organisation committed to fostering community development through sport, education and wellbeing. Founders Vita and Jalaj Dani share a vision that aligns well with the BVL’s mission to elevate physical literacy and grassroots sport in Assam.
The Super League Finals promise to celebrate not only the volleyball talent in Assam, but also the belief that volleyball can help to create a better, more inclusive world – a fundamental thread of the FIVB Strategic Vision 2032. The BVL is a shining example of the widespread impact that volleyball can have as a community-building tool, with potential to inspire similar initiatives across India and the Global Volleyball Movement.
