EXCITING YEAR OF VOLLEYBALL EVENTS TOPS AGENDA AT VOLLEYBALL COUNCIL MEETING

The Council met online today with even brighter future for volleyball on the horizon

The Volleyball Council convened online today to discuss an exhilarating year ahead for the sport, highlighted by the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball World Championships which are set to take place in the Philippines and Thailand, respectively. In addition to these landmark events, the Council also explored the sport’s long-term development among other key topics.

All FIVB Commission meetings, including this gathering, have been conducted online this month. This format aligns with the FIVB’s commitment to reducing environmental impact while providing greater flexibility for participants. The environmental benefits of this are substantial: the total carbon footprint of online versus onsite FIVB Commission meetings is 69 tonnes of CO2e lower, this largely due to the lack of air travel. This is equivalent to the emissions produced by running three to four cars continuously for an entire year or the annual carbon absorption of 3,100 trees*.

In his opening address, FIVB President Fabio Azevedo underscored the Volleyball Council’s crucial role in fulfilling the FIVB Strategic Vision 2032. He outlined several key pillars shaping the sport’s future that the Council should focus on, including: Consolidation of Volleyball World Championships and the VNL; FIVB World Ranking; FIVB World Calendar 2029-2032; and Technology and Integrity of the Game.

The Council received comprehensive updates on various topics, including the Volleyball Nations League 2024, enhancements to the FIVB World Ranking dashboard, upcoming senior and age-group volleyball events in 2025, and the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Additionally, discussions addressed key subjects shaping the sport’s future, such as the World Ranking system, the Volleyball Calendar for 2029-2032, FIVB Event Regulations, the Continental Championships 2026 and proposals from other commissions.

In closing the highly productive meeting, Council President Mehmet Akif Ustundag said:

“We have had a very productive meeting focused on the future of volleyball, and we are confident that the decisions taken will contribute to making volleyball a stronger sport on the global stage. The elevation of the World Championships, the improvement of the world ranking system, the proper planning of the 2029-2032 volleyball calendar, and the effective use of technology in our sport are all areas we have discussed that will serve as critical milestones in the development of volleyball. Our Council, together with the entire volleyball family, will continue to work diligently to achieve these goals.”

The FIVB Commission meetings have officially concluded after a month of highly productive gatherings. The key role of the commissions in driving FIVB Strategic Vision 2032 has been at the heart of these meetings, with the spirit of “Together as One” evident throughout, reinforcing a united approach to volleyball’s continued growth and success.
