SOMPORN REELECTED UNOPPOSED TO REMAIN AT TVA HELM FOR ANOTHER 4 YEARS

Bangkok, Thailand, March 26, 2025 – Mr Somporn Chaibangyang was reelected as President of the Thailand Volleyball Association for consecutive sixth time following the election during its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, allowing the association, under his remarkable leadership, to shore up its preparations for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in the next five months.

The meeting, which discussed various activities during the past year as well as future development plans and competitions and the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in particular, was held on Wednesday at Golden Tulip Sovereign Hotel Bangkok, attended by representatives from member clubs nationwide, 47 out of 51 clubs were eligible to vote in the election.

Somporn was the only candidate, proposed by the Royal Thai Navy Representative, and the meeting had elected him unanimously by acclamation as the TVA President. With the resounding support from all member clubs, he will now lead the TVA for another four years, expanding his working term in the association to 18  years in total.

The 75-year-old Somporn, who early last year was re-elected as President of the Southeast Asia Volleyball Association (SEAVA) during the organisation’s annual meeting in Bangkok, has already served as the TVA President for five times in a row (2011-13, 2013-15, 2015-17, 2017-21 and 2021-25) and another four-year term (2025-29) will give him the consecutive sixth in the position.

After the election, Somporn, himself Member of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League Council, said before those who supported him, “I feel humbled and honored to be reelected as the TVA President and able to serve the Thai volleyball community for the next four years. I would like to thank all member clubs for supporting me and their immense contributions to our beloved sport. Actually, I would like to call it a day and hand others the opportunity to continue working hard for the association and for sustainable development of the sport in Thailand.

“However, after discussions on this matter with many persons, everyone had learned that a tough task awaits us and Thailand as we are hosting the FIVB Women’s World Championship this coming August. Therefore, I will remain as the TVA President to continue our commitment for another term and after that I will make way for others to take over the job. To accomplish a number of TVA’s ultimate goals including making the Women’s World Championship the possible best preparation is not that easy.  We have to work hard closely together. We need collaboration and dedication. With great support from the member clubs and the Thai volleyball community including passionate fans, I’m convinced that we can make it,” the TVA President insisted.

In his two previous terms as the TVA President, Thailand women’s national team had captured the Asian title for second and third times (2013 and 2023), both occasions on home soil in Nakhon Ratchasima. The Thailand team also won the country’s first ever medal in indoor volleyball at the Asian Games when they finished third at the 2014 edition in Incheon, Korea. The following two editions saw Thailand claim the unprecedented silver medal at the 2018 Games in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia and another bronze medal at the 2022 Games in Hangzhou, China.

Thailand’s wealth of hosting experience cannot be ignored. The country has already hosted several major volleyball events including Asian and world competitions. The country hosted the 2016 FIVB World Grand Prix Finals and the 2024 Women’s Volleyball Nations League Finals at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium, Bangkok.

The 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship will take place in Thailand between August 22 and September 7.  An expanded 32 teams will compete in the pool preliminaries in four iconic cities – Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Nakhon Ratchasima, with the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals being held at the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium.
