Expanded format and alignment with U19 and U21 categories confirmed from 2026 onwards
The FIVB has opened the bidding process for the 2026 edition of the FIVB Volleyball U17 World Championships. Applications are now being accepted to host the second edition of the Girls’ and Boys’ U17 events.
The U17 World Championships are staged every two years as part of the FIVB’s portfolio of age-group events. The 2026 edition follows the successful launch of the category in 2024, when the FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship was held in Lima, Peru, and the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U17 World Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. China (GU17) and Italy (BU17) were crowned the inaugural World Champions.
From 2026 onwards, the U17 category will align with the U19 and U21 categories by including 24 teams per gender (instead of the current 16), thus providing greater competitive opportunities for national teams across all five continental confederations.
The FIVB has also confirmed updates to the qualification pathway and tournament format, with the U17 World Championships to be integrated into the FIVB World Ranking system, further aligning the event into the international development pathway.
From 2026, the U17 World Championships will implement an updated team registration procedure. Participating teams will be permitted to register up to 14 players on the short list (O-2bis), in line with the standardised procedures across other FIVB events.
Expressions of interest for the organisation of the competition must be submitted volleyball@fivb.com no later than 30 May 2025.
The final decision and event grant will be confirmed by the FIVB Board of Administration on 30 June 2025.
