Ren/Non suffer 0-2 loss to Thailand’s Taravadee/Worapeerachayakorn in pool play and will take on Polley/MacDonald in round of 16
Phu Yen, Vietnam, April 26, 2025 – The highly-anticipated final clash between Japan’s Ren Matsumoto/Non Matsumoto and Kiwis Shaunna Polley/Olivia MacDonald in the recent 24th Samila Open is set to reignite in the round of 16 of the AVC Women’s Beach Tour Phu Yen Open at the L’Aurora Phu Yen Beach here on Sunday.
As top teams showcased their prominent performances to demolish inexperienced opponents in the pool play on Saturday, Australia and Japan ruled the roost to have three teams apiece secure their places in the round of 16. China, Thailand and host Vietnam had two teams each to reach this round, while one team apiece from Vanuatu, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong China and New Zealand also make the cut.
The pool play ended on Saturday, with Australia’s top seeds Jasmine Fleming/Stefanie Fejes, gold medallists at the AVC Beach Tour 2nd Nuvali Open in Philippines early this month, beating Hong Kong, China’s To Wingtung/To Wingman 2-0 (21-14, 21-10) to top Pool A. However, both teams advanced to the Sunday morning’s round of 16.
As Fleming/Fejes will next take on Thailand’s Patcharaporn Seehawong/Samitta Simarongnam in the knockout round of 16, To/To are set to go up against China’s Yan Xu/Zhou Mingli.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s second seeds Shaunna Polley/Olivia MacDonald, who won two silver medals at the 2nd Nuvali Open and the 24th Samila Open, dominated Pool B following their comfortable 2-0 (21-11, 21-13) victory against Australia’s 14th seeds Tara Phillips/Lara Maric.
Another Australian pair, third seeds Elizabeth Alchin/Georgia Johnson, who claimed bronze in the 2025 World Beach Pro Tour Futures Coolangatta to their name, made a clean sweep in Pool C. The Aussies sealed a 2-0 win against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Thanh Tram/Nguyen Le Thi Tuong Vy in their opening clash on Saturday and a hard-fought 2-1 (19-21, 21-19, 17-15) victory against Tanarattha Udomchavee/Rumpaipruet Numwong on Saturday, knocking the Thai duo out of the women’s only event.
China’s fourth seeds Yan Xu/Zhou Mingli, who captured gold at the 2024 Wuhan Qingshan Futures, finished on top of Pool D without losing a set to their opponents. On Saturday, the Chinese tandem pulled off a sensational 2-0 (21-15, 21-19) win against Kazakhstan’s Laura Kabulbekova/Nadezhda Ivanchenko.
Pool E was dominated by Thailand’s 5th seeds and 2021 Asian champions Taravadee Naraphornrapat/Worapeerachayakorn Kongphopsarutawadee, who scored two wins in a row in the Pool including a stunning 2-0 (21-10, 21-16) victory against Japanese Ren/Non, who snatched gold at the recent 24th Samila Open, in their last pool play match on Saturday.
Japan’s 6th seeds Asami Shiba/Reika Murakami topped Pool F with two straight wins including 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) victory over Thailand’s Patcharaporn/Samitta in their last pool play match on Saturday.
Another Japanese duo, 7th seeds Saki Maruyama/Miki Ishii, claimed the top spot in Pool G following two wins in a row including a totally one-sided win 2-0 (21-9, 21-9) against Vanuatu’s Majabelle Lawac/Sherysyn Toko on Saturday.
China’s 9th seeds Yu Tong/Jiang Kaiyue did not drop a set to their respective rivals to top Pool H. In their last pool play encounter on Saturday, the Chinese duo downed Vietnam’s Chau Ngoc Lan/Ma Hong Hanh 2-0 (21-19, 21-16).
Excitement soars in the AVC Women’s Beach Tour Phu Yen Open, as teams try to give their best to win the Sunday morning’s round of 16 matches and keep hopes of qualifying for the afternoon’s quarterfinals alive.
However, the much-anticipated match between Japanese Ren/Non and Kiwis Polley/MacDonald is on the cards as the Sunday’s highlight. Both teams battled it out in the women’s final showdown at the recent 24th Samila Open before the Japanese duo ran away with the crown. Thus, the Sunday’s round of 16 match between them could be the next big thing as it will be the Samila Open final rematch.
The round of 16 and quarterfinals will take place on Sunday, with semifinal matchups and finals being held on Monday, followed by the awards presentation and closing ceremony.
