COUNTDOWN BEGINS: TOP ATHLETES GATHER FOR AVC BEACH TOUR PINGTUNG OPEN IN CHINESE TAIPEI FROM JULY 17 TO 20

Sunshine, beach, and Volleyball! AVC Beach Tour Pingtung Open is set to ignite the shores of Pingtung’s Qingzhou Coastal Recreation Area from July 17 to 20.

Hosted by the Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association (CTVBA), this highly-anticipated tournament welcomes 48 elite teams from 17 countries and regions, including Chinese Taipei’s 2 top men’s and women’s teams. Asian Games medalist and Korean beach volleyball sensation Shin Ji-eun, followed by nearly 100,000 fans on Instagram, will headline a star-studded lineup of elite athletes, all set to show in Pingtung!

CTVBA President Kong, Chien-jung stated that beach volleyball has become one of the most dynamic and highly engaging sports since its debut as an official Olympic event in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, mentioning its fast pace and visual excitement.

He also highlighted Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) ’s ongoing efforts to promote beach volleyball internationally. Chinese Taipei has also demonstrated strong commitment by actively seeking the opportunity to host international competitions. This year, Pingtung stop integrates indigenous cultural elements to boost the game experience for all local and international athletes.

The Sports Administration of the Ministry of Education announced that the Sports Department will be officially sanctioned on September 9. The government will continue to encourage and support sports associations through various international games. Among them, beach volleyball stands out as one of the most suitable sports for nationwide participation and serves as an ideal means of advancing the goal of “competitive sports for all.”

The match is composed of 24 men’s teams and 24 women’s teams competing for top honors, with each champions taking home US$2,500. Participating nations feature hosts Chinese Taipei, Australia, Hong Kong China, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Northern Mariana Islands, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, Vanuatu, and Vietnam.

The tournament brings all distinguished international athletes together. In the women’s bracket, Australia’s duo Fleming/Fejes and Thailand’s top-seeded pair Naraphornrapat/Worapeerachayakorn – both common medalists on the podium – will contend for the title. They will compete with Japan’s Ishii Miki, a seasoned blocker and two-time Asian Games silver medalist, as well as South Korea’s Shin Ji-eun, a national team standout and often dubbed the “Beach Volleyball Goddess” for her impressive performances and fanbase appeal.

As for the men’s section, marquee athletes New Zealand’s Ben O’Dea, won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games and is known for his powerful net play and international experience.

Chinese Taipei’s representatives include men’s pairs Hsieh Ya-jen/Wu Hsin-hsien, quarterfinalists in 2023, and Chuang Tzu-lin/Hu Cheng-kang, runners-up in this year’s national championships. The women’s teams include Yu Ya-hsuan/Pan Tzu-yi, who secured fifth in 2023, and Liu Pi-hsin/Wu Shu-fen, a returning quarterfinalist duo. Notably, Pan also works as a baker and maintains her training alongside her profession.

CTVBA and the Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Administration warmly welcome the public to Dapeng Bay to witness the outstanding performance of prominent international beach volleyball athletes. In addition to the thrilling matches, the organizers have arranged a vibrant beach carnival atmosphere featuring a live DJ party and an Athletes’ Night to enhance the festive spirit. Surrounding the competition venue, a special Indigenous Cultural Market will be held to showcase local crafts ,food and traditions, along with post-match concerts by popular singers, celebrating the passion and multicultural energy of Dapeng Bay. 

Furthermore, CTVBA will host a Beach Volleyball Training Camp, led by local athletes and professional coaches, to encourage more people to engage with and enjoy the excitement of beach volleyball.

Having hosted the Asian Beach Volleyball Tour in Penghu since 2019 – with interruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic – CTVBA moved the event to Taoyuan in 2024, and now to Pingtang for the first time, a region celebrated for its volleyball enthusiasm, showcasing different features and vibe!

The Pingtung stop is co-organized by Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association (CTVBA) , Pingtung County Government and Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area (NSA) Headquarters, Tourism Administration, Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), with support from the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), Sports Administration affiliated to Ministry of Education, Council of Indigenous Peoples, and Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee.
