Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, July 14, 2025 – The pool stage of the Asian Men’s U16 Volleyball Championship Thailand 2025 concluded with a series of emphatic straight-set victories, confirming the top eight teams advancing to the quarterfinal round. India, Iran, Japan and Pakistan topped their respective pools, while Thailand, Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Korea also booked their spots in the top-tier classification round.
All eight matches played on Monday across the two competition venues, Nakhon Pathom Gymnasium and Ratchaburi Gymnasium, located about 41 kilometers apart, ended in straight-set victories for the stronger sides, setting the stage for a thrilling knockout phase.
At Nakhon Pathom Gymnasium, in Pool B, Hong Kong, China saw their quarterfinal dreams dashed as Indonesia overpowered them 25-15, 25-13, 25-20.
Outside hitter Raka Dwi Prasetyo led the charge for Indonesia with 14 points, including 12 kills and two aces. No Hong Kong, China player reached double digits, with Lau Chi Ho scoring a team-high 8 points.
Meanwhile, reigning champions Iran put on a clinical display against Kazakhstan, breezing through 25-11, 25-16, 25-21. Iran outclassed their rivals in all departments, attacks (35–16), blocks (10–5), and aces (9–4).
Seyyedamirreza Mirhosseini topped the scoresheet with 16 points, while Arash Ashram and Azhvan Namazi contributed 10 and 9 points respectively. Kazakhstan’s Mansur Maratuly managed 8 points in their losing effort.
In Pool A, India extended their perfect run with a 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-15) triumph over China, benefiting from their rivals’ unforced errors (31 to India’s 14).
Rafik Ahmad starred with 16 points, supported by Attade Charan (11 points) and Apratim Bhadauriya (9 points). China’s Mao Guangyu led his side with 13 points.
Hosts Thailand, riding high from their win over China a day earlier, maintained their momentum by dominating Australia 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-18).
Thailand’s consistent transition play and efficient offense (40 attack points to Australia’s 15) proved decisive.
Pariwat Toehem led Thailand with 15 points, while Flynn Niu and Dylan Ottaway scored 4 each for Australia.
At Ratchaburi Gymnasium, in Pool D, Korea crushed Saudi Arabia 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-8) in a lopsided contest. Korea dominated across the board, attacks (33–16), blocks (12–2), aces (7–0), and capitalized on Saudi Arabia’s errors (23–12).
Kang Kyungmin starred with 19 points, including 6 blocks, while Seo Donghyeon and Kim Onyou added 11 apiece. Saeed Mukhtar was the lone bright spot for Saudi Arabia with 8 points.
Pakistan, meanwhile, exacted sweet revenge over Chinese Taipei, which had beaten them in the bronze medal match two years ago. In a commanding 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-16) performance, Pakistan continued their flawless run.
Faizan Ullah led with 15 points, while Mohammad Talha Mehar and Mohammad Junaid chipped in 14 and 10 respectively. Ni Tuan-Shan top-scored for Chinese Taipei with 9 points.
In Pool C, Japan delivered a masterclass against previous silver medalists Uzbekistan, cruising to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-16) win.
Hayato Konishide was unstoppable with 20 points from attacks, while Junya Tezuka added 16. Ozodbek Rahimjonov posted 10 points for Uzbekistan.
At the end of the pool round-robin preliminaries on Monday, India topped Pool A with 9 points from three straight wins, followed by Thailand (6 points), China (3), and Australia (0). In Pool B, Iran led with 9 points, followed by Indonesia (6), Kazakhstan (3), and Hong Kong, China (0).
Japan secured first place in Pool C with 9 points, followed by Uzbekistan (6), Mongolia (3), and UAE (0; officially disqualified after failing to appear for their match), while the Pool D encounters saw Pakistan finish top with 9 points, while Korea placed second (5), followed by Chinese Taipei (4) and Saudi Arabia (0).
India, Japan, and Pakistan completed the preliminary round undefeated without dropping a single set.
Tuesday, July 15 is designated as a rest and recovery day. The championship resumes on Wednesday, July 16, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the 1st–8th Classification Round featuring Pool E (Nakhon Pathom): India, Thailand, Japan, Uzbekistan, and Pool F (Nakhon Pathom): Iran, Indonesia, Pakistan, Korea
The lower-ranked teams will move into the 9th–16th Classification Round consisting of Pool G (Ratchaburi) China, Australia, Mongolia and Pool H (Ratchaburi): Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, China, Chinese Taipei, Saudi Arabia.
At Nakhon Pathom Gymnasium on Wednesday, Iran will challenge Korea in Pool F, with Pakistan going up against Indonesia. The other two matches see Japan take on Thailand and India face Uzbekistan in Pool E.
At Ratchaburi Gymnasium, China take on UAE (disqualified earlier) and Mongolia face off against Australia in Pool G. Pool H encounters see Kazakhstan play Saudi Arabia and Chinese Taipei lock horns with Hong Kong, China.
With high stakes and national pride on the line, the final stages of the Asian Men’s U16 Championship promise electrifying volleyball and emerging stars destined for greatness.
Top four teams from this championship will qualify for the 2026 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U17 World Championship, with the host country yet confirmed.
