Pingtung City, Chinese Taipei, July 19, 2025 – The scene is set for a thrilling climax at the AVC Beach Tour Pingtung Open, with Australia assured of clinching the men’s title after an all-Australian final was locked in, while the women’s title race will witness a fiery clash between Australia’s Stefanie Fejes/Jasmine Fleming and Thailand’s seasoned duo Taravadee Naraphornrapat/Worapeerachayakorn Kongphopsarutawadee, promising fans a grandstand finish to this inaugural spectacle at Qinzhou Beach, Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area.
Australia’s top seeds D’Artagnan Potts/Jack Pearse, 2024 Asian champions and bronze medallists at this year’s AVC Beach Tour Pingtan Open in China, stayed true to form on Saturday. They breezed past Japan’s Kai Kurokawa/Ryuichi Adachi 2-0 (21-11, 21-17) in the morning quarterfinals, before dispatching Northern Mariana Islands’ Mister Logan Jon/Johnson Andrew Scott with another straight-set win 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) in the afternoon semifinals.
Their compatriots, sixth seeds Ben Hood/Joshua Howat, proved they were still a force to be reckoned with.
After ousting Nuvali Open champions Paul Burnett/Luke Ryan in a highly anticipated all-Australian quarterfinals 2-0 (21-17, 21-16), they fought tooth and nail to overcome Japan’s Takumi Takahashi/Jumpei Ikeda in a dramatic semifinal showdown 2-1 (21-17, 16-21, 15-12).
With both Aussie pairs surging into the title match, Australia has the gold medal in the bag, the only question remaining is: which duo will take it home? Meanwhile, Takahashi/Ikeda will battle it out against Mister/Johnson for the men’s bronze medal in Sunday’s third-place playoff.
The women’s final is shaping up to be another clash of Titans, as second-seeded Australians Fejes/Fleming square off with Thai stalwarts Taravadee/Worapeerachayakorn in a rematch packed with recent history. Earlier this May, Fejes and Fleming had the upper hand, sweeping the Thai duo 2-0 in the bronze medal match at the AVC Beach Tour Pingtan Open in Fujian, China.
On Saturday, Fejes and Fleming were all business, eliminating Japan’s Asami Shiba/Reika Murakami in commanding fashion 2-0 (21-18, 21-11) to earn their spot in the final.
Meanwhile, Taravadee and Worapeerachayakorn, 2021 Asian champions, showed they are still a formidable force.
The Thai pair stunned top-seeded Australians Georgia Johnson/Elizabeth Alchin, bronze medallists at both the Nuvali Open in Philippines and Phu Yen Open in Vietnam, with a clinical 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) victory in the semifinals.
The bronze medal match will feature Shiba/Murakami taking on Johnson/Alchin in what promises to be another high-stakes battle on the sand.
After action-packed four days, the curtain will fall on the first-ever AVC Beach Tour Pingtung Open on Sunday, July 20. The tournament has served as a shining example of Chinese Taipei’s commitment to developing competitive sports through international engagement, with beach volleyball standing out as a sport that unites both elite athletes and the wider public under the shared spirit of participation and passion.
Chinese Taipei has consistently supported beach volleyball on the continental stage, having hosted the Asian Beach Volleyball Tour in Penghu since 2019 (with a brief hiatus due to the pandemic), before moving to Taoyuan in 2024 and now, for the first time, to Pingtung, a region renowned for its love of the sport and vibrant beach culture.
This year’s event has been jointly organized by the Chinese Taipei Volleyball Association (CTVBA), Pingtung County Government, and the Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Headquarters, under the Tourism Administration, Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), with strong support from the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC), the Sports Administration under the Ministry of Education, the Council of Indigenous Peoples, and the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee.
As the sun sets on the golden shores of Pingtung, athletes will lay it all on the line one last time, with glory, pride, and a place in history at stake.
