CHO YEONGUN: KOREA’S YOUNG GUN IN THE MIDDLE

His high-efficiency hitting keeps him a key piece for Korea at the Boys’ U19 World Championship

Korea’s offense has been led by the powerful scoring of Lee Junho and Bang Kangho. While the hitters deliver the big numbers, middle blocker Cho Yeongun supports the system by finishing plays, managing the net and staying in sync with the setter.

Through Korea’s first three matches at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship, he has quietly stood out with one of the highest attack efficiencies on the team. He has converted over 70 percent of his swings, providing a consistent option in the middle that fits the team’s fast-paced style.

Cho Yeongun rises for a quick attack against Brazil during Korea’s third straight win in Tashkent.

“I sincerely thank everyone who has supported us,” Cho said after Korea’s win against Brazil. “In this game, our reception was really strong, and because our rotations were fast, there were many reasons we were able to win. Everyone on the team played well, and I want to give all the credit to my teammates.”

Korea rely on speed and precision, and Cho’s role fits within that structure. He is not meant to be the top scorer, but rather a reliable presence who connects with the setter and finishes when needed. That responsibility, he says, is something he welcomes.

“I think we are preparing well and getting better each match,” he said. “Our team is focused, and I believe we can keep improving.”

Cho connects on a fast-tempo play, helping Korea stay in rhythm during pool play.

Facing a team like Brazil required a different kind of discipline. Cho acknowledged the challenge after the match. “They had more experience and taller players, so it was not easy to compete with them,” he said. “But we stayed focused on our game.”

Cho began playing volleyball in elementary school. His height gave him a natural starting point, but it was the support of his coaches that shaped his development.

“I have always been considered tall in Korea, so I naturally ended up playing above the net,” he said. “I was lucky to meet good coaches and mentors who taught me a lot. Thanks to everything I learned from them over time, I was able to continue developing as a player.”

Cho Yongeun celebrates a point with Bang Kangho in their match against Brazil.

As he grows into his role at 1.98 meters, 18-year-old Cho studies players like veteran middle blocker Shin Yungsuk for inspiration.

“I admire him a lot,” Cho said. “He is a great leader, and I try to learn from how he plays.”

Outside volleyball, he keeps things simple. He spends his time watching movies, playing games and relaxing with friends. His quiet personality reflects the calm way he plays, never rushing, never forcing the moment.

In a team powered by heavy hitters on the outside, Korea rely on stability through the middle. Cho may not draw the same attention as his scoring teammates, but his consistency and calm presence in the middle have become just as valuable. He delivers when needed, reads the game well and helps maintain balance when it matters most.

As the matches grow tougher, he remains committed to what he can control.

“Even if we lose or things do not go our way, we will keep doing our best to finish as high as possible,” he said.

It is that steady, disciplined play that has made him Korea’s young gun in the middle.
