Türkiye finish strong and claim first victory
Reigning European champions Türkiye delivered a strong performance on Saturday to start their campaign at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship with a solid victory over continental rivals Spain in Pool E.
Playing in Nakhon Ratchasima, the team coached by Daniele Santarelli dominated the first two sets and powered through at the end of the third to beat the Spanish 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23) and take their first three points in the tournament.

Canada secure key win against Bulgaria
Also triumphing in their opening match in Nakhon Ratchasima were Canada, who topped Bulgaria 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18) and came out on top in a match that could be pivotal to determine which teams will advance to the next round.
Outside hitter Andrea Mitrovic had a strong offensive presence for the Canadians, scoring a team-high 17 points (16 kills, one ace). Middle blocker Nyadholi Thokbuom and opposite Anna Smrek also performed well, adding 15 and 12 points respectively.

China avoid upset with comeback win over Mexico
China turned things around and avoided what would have been a frustrating debut at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship by coming back to beat Mexico on Saturday in Chiang Mai.
The top-ranked team in Pool F, the Asians went down in the first set of their opening match, but showed strength to right the ship and walk away with a 3-1 (22-25, 26-24, 25-10, 25-18) victory that earned them valuable three points in the tournament.

A winning start for the Dominican Republic
In the other match of the day in Pool F, the Dominican Republic also claimed three points, taking Colombia down with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-13) victory in Chiang Mai.
Team captain and outside hitter Brayelin Martínez led all scorers with 20 points (17 kills, three blocks), three more than opposite Gaila González, who got to 17 with 11 kills, four aces and two blocks.

Serbia start title defense on the right foot
Two-time FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship defending champions Serbia started their title defense on the right foot, sweeping Ukraine on Saturday in their first match in the 2025 edition of the tournament.
The Europeans got on the court in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, and delivered a consistently strong performance to dominate European rivals Ukraine to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-17) victory on the first day of matches in Pool H.

Japan start strong in Pool H
Also aiming at winning a medal in Thailand, Asian powerhouse Japan had a strong start to their campaign in Bangkok, beating Cameroon 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) in their first Pool H match.
Young opposite Miku Akimoto carried the Japanese offense in their debut – the 19-year-old hitter delivered 18 points, with 11 kills, four aces and one block. Team captain and outside hitter Mayu Ishikawa contributed 11, with nine kills and two aces.

Stysiak scores 29 as Poland overcome valiant Vietnam in World Champs debut
Poland found their from after a first-set hiccup and had a successful debut in the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Championship on Saturday in Phuket, overcoming a determined Vietnam team in the last match of the second day of action in Thailand.
Ranked third in the FIVB World Ranking, the Europeans were upset by the 22nd-placed Asians in the first set, but got back on track and triumphed 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-12, 25-22), taking all three points in their first Pool G match.

Germany with a straight set win versus Kenya
Fellow Europeans Germany also had a solid start to their Pool G campaign on Saturday and took down African champions Kenya 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-20) in Phuket.
Lina Alsmeier and Emilia Weske were Germany’s leading scorers in the match, with each of them producing 13 points. The outside hitter got to the mark with 12 kills and one ace, while the opposite registered 11 kills and two blocks.
