Innovative mural in the Philippines showcases seven of the world’s top volleyball stars
In a celebration of sport, art and community, the Philippines has become home to a striking and innovative volleyball court mural. The Volleyball Legacy Art Project, spearheaded by the FIVB and the FIVB Volleyball Foundation, transforms an ordinary outdoor court into a striking canvas featuring seven of the world’s top volleyball stars.
This initiative coincides with the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship in the Philippines, marking the first time the prestigious tournament has been hosted in Southeast Asia.
The artist behind the vision
The mural was created by celebrated urban artist Maya Carandang, renowned for turning sports courts into living pieces of art. His MAYA100 project, a mission to create 100 sports court artworks across the Philippines, celebrates culture and community through bold, dynamic designs.

A celebration of sport, art and community
The mural was officially unveiled yesterday at the Royal View Garden Residences in Manila. The ceremony was attended by the renowned artist Maya Carandang, FIVB President Fabio Azevedo, Asian Volleyball Confederation President and FIVB Executive Vice President Ramon Suzara and Bryan Bagunas, one of the athletes featured in the artwork.
Also announced during the unveiling was the donation of volleyball equipment by the FIVB, for use across the local community.
Speaking about the artwork, Yuki Ishikawa, another athlete in the mural stated:
“I am very happy to have been included in this project alongside top players from around the world. I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr Maya, who created this painting. I hope that this artwork will serve as an opportunity for volleyball to continue developing further on a global scale.”
Erik Shoji of the USA added:
“I’m so honoured to be part of the Volleyball Legacy Art Project. Seeing our sport celebrated through art like this is really special, and I’m proud to be included in a mural that I hope will inspire future generations to fall in love with volleyball. What an amazing way to leave a lasting legacy here in the Philippines!”
The Volleyball Legacy Art Project is a perfect example of how volleyball can transcend competition, becoming a platform for artistic expression and community empowerment.
