Philippines faces Thailand anew for 5th Place in AVC U16 Volleyball Championship

AMMAN, Jordan — The Philippines and Thailand clash one last time in the 2nd Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Asian Women’s U16 Volleyball Championship for a fifth-place finish on Saturday at the Prince Hamzah Sports Hall here.

Xyz Rayco poured in 23 points off 19 kills, two blocks, and two aces in the Philippines’ sweep of Hong Kong, China, 25-20, 25-19, 25-10, on Friday to advance to the battle for 5th.

“We made up for the mistakes we had yesterday. We didn’t want to lose that easily again,” said Rayco after bouncing back from a five-set loss to Thailand on Thursday.

Middle blocker Madele Gale was also instrumental for Alas with 11 points, while other middle blocker Jhenica Sadia and setter Resty Jane Olaguir each finished with six points. 

Thailand, on the other hand, made quick work of Uzbekistan, 25-9, 25-14, 25-14, to set a rematch with the Philippines at 12:30 p.m.

Chamikon Cankawe and Emmenuel Ojeaga led the Thais with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Thailand looks to assert its mastery of the Philippines in the final day after pulling off a come-from-behind 25-23, 15-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-8 win.

Hong Kong, China and Uzbekistan clash for 7th place at 10 a.m., also at court 1.

Meanwhile, Kazakhstan and Iran clash for 9th place also on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Princess Sumaya Hall.

Kazakhstan dominated Australia, 26-24, 25-12, 25-14, behind Margarita Vagner’s 13-point outing.

Besides Vagner, Saida Irismatova also delivered for the Kazakhs with nine points. Tomiris Kurmasheva had eight points, while Aisha Mukhamadiyeva, Assiya Askarova, and Ulyana Kokina added seven.

Iran routed host Jordan, 25-10, 25-18, 25-10.

Taraneh Jamchi fired seven aces for 13 points, while Melina Ghofrani tallied 12 points for the Iranians.

Australia and Jordan fight for an 11th place finish at 12:30, while India and Qatar clash for 13th place at 10 a.m. at court 2.
